No. 10 Atsuko Okada Househam
JOY50周年記念おめでとうございます。
浦島さんとは大学卒業時、大好きな生まれ故郷十勝に戻って来るためJOYに雇っていただくか、あるいは採用通知が届いた外資系航空会社で仕事をするか迷っていた私に「広い世界を見ておいで、そしてまた縁があったらうちにおいで」と背中を押してくれて以来のご縁ですが、8年後十勝に戻って通訳／翻訳部長として働かせていただいただき、そこで今の主人と知り合いました。
そんな懐の広い、そして人との繋がりを大切にして自分の力に変えていく浦島さんだったからこそ今のJOYがあるのだと思います。 またJOYで働いたのは一年余でしたが、その間に知り合ったJOYで働くスタッフの人たちとは今でもお付き合いがあったり、遊びに行くと笑顔で迎えてくれる素敵な職場です。
これからもJOYのそしてそれに関わる皆様の益々のご活躍をお祈りしています。
No. 9 Heather & Riaz
We have such fond memories of our time at Joy. When we arrived, on March 17, 2000, our first impression was snow…snow and more snow! Even for us Canadians, there was so much snow!
The weather was cold but Urashima san and the Joy staff, teachers and students were warm. The Joy community is made up of dedicated, kind, clever and fun people, and we felt welcomed and supported.
Some of the memories that pop to mind include
- lots of games of Jenga where students asked or answered a question in English before removing a block,
- setting up a “restaurant” in the classroom, complete with student-created menus, to practice ordering food in English,
- English cooking (Heather’s mom came to visit and joined in),
- our December holiday English program, including holiday baking and travel English workshops,
- late-night trips to the 711 while class planning,
- Arbor Day tree planting and feasting with Joy staff and students,
- road trips to Shiretoko, Kushiro, Lake Akan and Otaru,
- Scott and Kanae’s wedding, and
- our welcome and goodbye parties in Bucky Hall.
These are just a few of the many, many good memories we have of Joy and our time in Hokkaido.
Congratulations to Urashima san and Joy’s staff, teachers and students for 50 amazing years! We hope Joy is around for another 50 years (and beyond)!

イングリッシュ・ハウス・ジョイの 50周年記念、おめでとうございます！ 思い起こせば、私が初めてジョイにお世話になったのは、44年前、高校2年生の時でした。当時はインターネットもALTもいない時代。オール・イングリッシュ・デイに参加し、初めてネイティブスピーカーと話した時の衝撃は、今でもよく覚えています。今から考えても、ものすごく斬新なイベントでしたよね！
それ以来、浦島さんとは、生徒として、ジョイの職員として、そして人生の相談役としても、長いお付き合いをさせていただいています。これまでたくさんの人たちに出会いや学びの場を与えてきたジョイが、これからもずっと続いていくことを願っています。浦島さん、これからもお元気で、末長くよろしくお願いします！

ジョイ５０周年、おめでとうございます。私とハリーがジョイでお世話になったのは１９８０年から１９８３年まででジョイでは初めての事が沢山ありました。初めての外国人講師、初めての結婚披露宴会場（多分唯一の？）、初めての英文雑誌「ノーザン・ライツ」、初めてのオール・イングリッシュ・デイ、初めてのカーリングチーム等々。
私達にとってジョイは単なる職場ではなく仲間と集い合う生活の場でした。私にとって大学の英語部の大先輩で怖いイメージのあった浦島さんが、いつしか私達にとっては家族のような存在になりました。あれから４０数年、ずっと進化し続けたジョイの５０周年をお祝いできる事がとても嬉しいです。浦島さん、ありがとうございました。
Happy 50th Anniversary! I would like to thank Urashima-san for letting me be a part of English House JOY (now JOY English Academy). It meant a lot to me to have that opportunity and also to have a chance to marry my wife, Etsuko. I spent three years of the best time of my life in Obihiro. Thank you again, Urashima-san!
