Well, Orin and I went to Shiretoko last weekend. As you may remember, in my last blog post, I said I hoped to see whales… but I didn’t! I learned that to see whales, you have to go to the south side of Shiretoko Peninsula, but we were on the north side, in Utoro.
We heard that you could easily see bears in the area near our hotel. But guess what? We didn’t see bears, either! So we were a little disappointed that we couldn’t see any cool animals. However, we did see many beautiful sights. Shiretoko is truly a one-of-a-kind place. Here are some pictures I took from our trip.
The first is the Godzilla rock. Did you know about this? It’s in Utoro. It really looks like Godzilla!
We went on a sightseeing boat from Utoro. It was a little cloudy, but the cliffs were beautiful.
We didn’t have the greatest weather, but the sky was incredibly dramatic. I took many pictures, but here is just one:
The next day, we went to the Five Lakes. We had great weather. We walked around the lakes, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.
During our walk, we found this plant. Do you know what it is? In English, the common name is “Sun dew.” It catches insects with its little sticky leaves, and eats them. Cool, huh?
We didn’t see any bears or whales, but we did see deer. Here is our proof:
As we were coming home, we decided to drive on Notsuke Peninsula, on the small, skinny road. We didn’t have much time to stop, but I’m glad we went. Once again, the sky was very dramatic and beautiful.
Well, that’s all I have to show you from Shiretoko! I hope you enjoyed my pictures. Remember, Orin and I are playing a concert on Tuesday, September 28th at 7:30. If you want to hear some traditional American music, some folk music, songs I’ve written myself, and the banjo, please come out and listen! I’d love to see you all there. Have a great weekend!

    Hi, Kendra!
I saw the beautiful pictures you took in Shiretoko.
I was born and brought up in Hokkaido.
However, I haven’t been to Shiretoko National Park yet.
I also have never seen any bears, either!
Now I learned that Shiretoko is an awesome place!
If I have a chance, I’d love to take pictures of Shiretoko’s beautiful sceneries.
    Thanks for sharing wonderful experience!
