Recently, Orin and I went to karaoke for the first time in Japan. It was really fun! Three of our students came, and one of them had a birthday. We surprised him with cake and flowers. We also sang him “Happy Birthday,” but not with the karaoke machine – by ourselves. There were many different “Happy Birthday” songs to choose from, and we weren’t sure which one to pick!
Karaoke in Japan is very different from karaoke in the U.S. For instance, in Japan, you get a small room with your friends. In the U.S., you don’t have your own room. Usually, you sign up with the MC, and you have to sing in front of everyone in the bar. When I told this to some of my students, they were so surprised, and I think they got embarrassed just thinking about it. But it’s not so bad singing in front of the whole bar! Everyone does it, and it’s all in fun. I’ll admit it’s very easy to sing only in front of friends and in your own room, but it’s also pretty exciting to sing in front of strangers. If anyone comes to visit me in the U.S., I think we should try to go to American karaoke!
