DANI

As many of you know, I climbed Tsurugiyama on May 17th with 7 other people. We had a great time; the weather was great and the views were amazing! Kendra and Joe both posted pictures from the hike on their blogs, so please check them out if you haven’t already. I took many pictures during the hike, but since they already posted many great pictures on their blogs, I will only post one picture related to the hike.
After we got back to Obihiro in the afternoon, I was getting ready to take a shower when I noticed something black on my chest. I looked closer and realized it was a tick (dani in Japanese). It was biting me, but it hadn’t gone under my skin yet. So, I was able to pull it out without breaking the head off. I kept it in a small glass jar because I had never been bitten by a tick before. In some areas of the U.S., ticks carry a very dangerous disease called Lyme disease (if you want to learn more about Lyme disease, check out : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease). I was scared at first because I didn’t know if ticks were dangerous in Japan! I searched the internet and talked to my coworkers and students, and I found out that it is not a problem in Japan. In fact, I talked to many people who have been bitten by ticks before. They are all still alive, so that made me very happy!
I took this picture a few days after the hike. Meet my new friend, Dani:

I found out on the internet that Dani is a deer tick. Unfortunately, she/he died shortly after I put him/her in the jar, but I still have him/her. Let me know if you want to meet him/her. And tell me if you think it looks like a male or a female!
Have you ever been bitten by a tick? Please share any tick-related stories on my blog.
