MEMORY - USE IT OR LOSE IT! The more you try to develop your memory, the better it gets. In a way your memory can be compared to your muscles, so exercise your memory everyday and you'll be mentally fit. Having a good memory is important if you're studying a new language, like English. Here's a simple rule to follow. If you're learning new vocabulary or practicing pronunciation repeat the word three times out loud. This puts the word into your short term memory. Then if you repeat the word again, three times, out loud, you'll be developing your long term memory. Once a new word is in your long term memory, it stays there for a long time and you can retrieve it when you need it. In my Step 2 Class this week, we had a good laugh because some students were forgetting things. They were tired and said they couldn't remember their new words because their brain was not good any more. After we finished laughing, I explained that when you're tired you sometimes feel that you have memory loss. You forget things, people's names, or names of simple objects. I told the class not to worry, relax, try getting a good night's sleep. Exercising your memory can be as easy as doing a crossword puzzle, trying to solve math problems, reading poetry, or keeping a daily diary. Try some of these suggestions or take the advice of one student. Relax, take a warm bath, you'll feel better in the morning. ]]>

Students of all ages enjoyed the Hallowe'en activities at Joy this week. There were many treats being shared, chocolate, candy, donuts, homemade desserts and delicious sweet potato tempura. The big attraction was the Hallowe'en room in Joy C building. Most students loved the decorations, the spooky atmosphere and the scary music. Did you help to free Princess Pumpkin from the locked cage? Almost everyone had fun , except one small boy, I'm very sorry for scaring him and making him cry. Trick or Treat! ]]>

I can't speak for Paul or Joe but my seminar will be very helpful for teachers, high school students and regular Joy students trying to improve their speaking and listening. My seminar is called, "CONVERSATION STRATEGIES". You'll learn techniques how to start a conversation, keep it going and learn how listening skills can improve your conversation. You won't be falling asleep in this seminar because you'll be practicing these techniques and speaking with many different people. I promise you, you'll have fun learning conversation strategies! ]]>

In my Wednesday night S1F Class we looked at goal setting. I encouraged my high school students, Shiori and Koki, to select an area of improvement for themselves and I would also suggest a new goal for them as well. Shiori wants to be able to speak more, say more in a conversation with ease. I suggested that she try and speak clearer and louder also. Koki, selected vocabulary development for himself and my goal for him was to practice his pronunciation. Yukina, the third high school student, had a cold and was absent. We'll set new goals when she returns. Yukina, get better soon and hope to see you next week. The class ended with the students setting a new goal for me. Aren't high school students helpful?! They said I should learn Japanese. Arigato gazimus, is that spelled correctly? Thank you very much, I mean that sincerely. There's a wonderful atmosphere here at Joy, when students and teachers can learn together. ]]>

Today in class we looked at how to use "Really", as an answer to show interest or surprise. When your voice goes up, you're asking a question and when your voice is flat, you are showing interest. You asked and answered question from page 29, and listened to people talk about their friends. Then we finished the class talking about Rika, asking and answering questions, Where is she today?, How old is she?, What does she do?. Thank you Kazuko for the cookies and Hiromi for the herbs. Everyone had such different answers, Koki doesn't drink coffee but everyone else does. Shiori is very busy making breakfast and lunch for her family. Yukina talks a lot but Koki doesn't. Page 35 was very easy for you, simple present statements, and speaking naturally was a good review. The question about singing in the shower was very interesting, Koki and Shiori do but Yukina doesn't. Next week we'll start class with Lesson B, page 35. See you then.
