MEMORY - USE IT OR LOSE IT!
The more you try to develop your memory, the better it gets. In a way your memory can be compared to your muscles, so exercise your memory everyday and you'll be mentally fit.
Having a good memory is important if you're studying a new language, like English. Here's a simple rule to follow. If you're learning new vocabulary or practicing pronunciation repeat the word three times out loud. This puts the word into your short term memory. Then if you repeat the word again, three times, out loud, you'll be developing your long term memory. Once a new word is in your long term memory, it stays there for a long time and you can retrieve it when you need it.
In my Step 2 Class this week, we had a good laugh because some students were forgetting things. They were tired and said they couldn't remember their new words because their brain was not good any more. After we finished laughing, I explained that when you're tired you sometimes feel that you have memory loss. You forget things, people's names, or names of simple objects. I told the class not to worry, relax, try getting a good night's sleep. Exercising your memory can be as easy as doing a crossword puzzle, trying to solve math problems, reading poetry, or keeping a daily diary. Try some of these suggestions or take the advice of one student. Relax, take a warm bath, you'll feel better in the morning.
People often ask me why I decided to come to Japan. My answer is simple and to the point, it has always been my dream to come to Japan, not just to visit but to live and teach here. I remember the first time I said out loud,"Someday I'm going to Japan!". I was an elementary school teacher in Canada and my students were studying people and their culture. Japan was one of the countries that the students studied and compared with Canadian culture. One boy made a presentation about May 5th, Boy's Day. We all made kites and hung them outside our school on the flag pole. Everyone was excited because in Canada there isn't Boy's Day. There is Teacher's Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, even Grandparents' Day, but no Boy's or Girl's Day. I set a goal that one day I'd find a way to live and work in Japan. Teaching and traveling in Japan this past six months has been a great cultural experience for Paul and I. We've enjoyed sushi, gengis kan and yakiniku restaurants, Obihiro fireworks, odori dancing at Lake Toya, Furano lavender icecream, Tokachi fresh potatoes and yams, homemade Japanese pickles, Handa Cheese farm, motorcycle touring to Lake Mashu, Sapporo's Odori Park, an onsen at Lake Akan, Hokodate street festival, butadong, Obihiro Culture Hall, Jazz at the Hokkaido Hotel, JICA drummers and shopping at the Chitose Outlet Mall. Many of our students and Joy staff have taken the time to help us enjoy these events. Thank you everyone. If I've forgotten any, or misspelled some Japanese words, please let me know. In December, we plan to experience the big city culture of Kyoto and Tokyo. Aren't we lucky!!

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving and Happy Sports Day in Japan. We have a long weekend to celebrate both holidays. October 13th. means that summer is gone and the fall season is here. Reflecting back on the summer, I remember some rainy weekends but we were lucky to have a few sunny days at Lake Toya. It's a beautiful part of Hokkaido. Last summer, Paul and I travelled out west through the USA and Canada. We had 30 days of hot, sunny weather with only 2 days of rain. Hope you like the pics. Hello, and welcome to the Fall Semester at Joy.
In my Wednesday night S1F Class we looked at goal setting. I encouraged my high school students, Shiori and Koki, to select an area of improvement for themselves and I would also suggest a new goal for them as well.
Shiori wants to be able to speak more, say more in a conversation with ease. I suggested that she try and speak clearer and louder also.
Koki, selected vocabulary development for himself and my goal for him was to practice his pronunciation.
Yukina, the third high school student, had a cold and was absent. We'll set new goals when she returns. Yukina, get better soon and hope to see you next week.
The class ended with the students setting a new goal for me. Aren't high school students helpful?! They said I should learn Japanese. Arigato gazimus, is that spelled correctly? Thank you very much, I mean that sincerely. There's a wonderful atmosphere here at Joy, when students and teachers can learn together.
You talked about your airport experiences both good and bad and the increased security when checking in. We read the articles and asked and answered questions about Marina, Jonathan, Koji and Maki. The Grammar Bank 3A, on page 130 explains the rules for the present continuous. Look it over for homework and we'll start there next week. Mika, thanks for the wheat flour and the computer printout. It will help me a lot.
Hello Yukina, Shiori and Koki. We started tonight's class with the question-What do you do in the morning?, from page 34. Everyone had such different answers, Koki doesn't drink coffee but everyone else does. Shiori is very busy making breakfast and lunch for her family. Yukina talks a lot but Koki doesn't. Page 35 was very easy for you, simple present statements, and speaking naturally was a good review. The question about singing in the shower was very interesting, Koki and Shiori do but Yukina doesn't. Next week we'll start class with Lesson B, page 35. See you then. Good luck with your tests Shiori.
