This week there was some discussion about doctor shortages. Misako had an article about the shortage of obstetricians, in particular in Hokkaido. We've seen articles about the looming lack of health care professionals in general because of shifting population demographics and a lack of interest among young people in entering the care professions. In Canada we have a shortage of doctors right now. Part of Canada's problem is rooted in an erroneous report in 1991 that predicted a surplus of doctors in Canada. In response, provincial governments cut enrollment in medical schools to save money. So we've endded up with a shortage of Canadian trained doctors. But we have no shortage of trained English speaking foreign doctors who have immigrated here or want to immigrate to Canada. The problem is those doctors finding residencies, the two year period of clinical training they need to complete their training for Canadian provincial licences. There are a lot of frustrated people in Canada.

Many of our students watched the program about the Dutch painter Vermeer. One of his paintings is currently on view in Tokyo at an exhibition of 17th century Dutch painting. He was a wonderful painter of light, often choosing domestic scenes as his subject. Everyone who saw the show really enjoyed it. On a negative note, the Chinese misrepresentation of products by using Japanese names was in the news. Apparently a number of Chinese firms label their products with names of places in Hokkaido to lead consumers into thinking that they are from Japan. I'm sorry to say what I learned from my students in Korea is bad news for Japanese companies. Chinese companies have copied complete cars. One of my students from GM watched a door removed from their car and put on the Chinese copy. It fit perfectly. The Chinese expressed surprise and then just shrugged it away. If the largest company in the world couldn't get an admission of responsibility, I fear small Japanese companies don't stand a chance.
Everyone from the Thursday morning step 5 class had done these things in school, although Tomoko didn't do toilets in her high school. In my province in Canada, and most provinces, I think, students or teachers are not allowed to clean. Cleaning must be done by professional janitorial staff. I've been surprised as well to hear that students in junior high school and elementary school get lunch at school. In Canada students bring their lunch or go home. In high school students can buy a lunch if they wish.
It's English Expo week coming up this weekend. Both Trish and I will be giving seminars, hers on conversation stradegies and mine on listening using pop music. If you haven't made a decision yet, check with Shinobu at the desk. You can always drop by the All English party from 4:15 to 5:15. Misako in the CTC class was telling us about going to a Jinzen Wedding (her nephew's). It sounded something like a North American wedding. She described a multi-course lunch and one of the servings being Matsutake mushrooms. We've never heard of them in Canada, Shitake mushrooms are a delicacy at home. Yukari in the Step 4 H class on Thursday recommends "Sex and The City" tapes for English study. She watches them with Japanese subtitles then no subtitles. Sounds like a good strategy to me.
Ryukichi went to Kitami for a business seminar last weekend and found the weather very hot. Yasuko went looking for water borne bugs for her video about rivers. She found a dirty river to video but couldn't bring herself to go searching in the water. Two junior high school students walking by volunteered to search the water for her. She called their school afterwards to tell their teacher how kind they were. Mika took her glasses off and then stepped on them. She had to order a new pair. Kyoko had a scare when the lights at work started swaying in the earthquake. Atsuko was proud of her son's award for best photo in the Obihiro high school photo contest. He'll be entering the Hokkaido contest next. Haruki was shocked at the opticians when he found out that he needed reading glasses. Congratulations to Yo who will be going to McGill University in Montreal next spring to do research. Montreal is a wonderful city and he'll be there for three years.
We clarified the terms "middleman" and "wholesaler" in the product chain. I wondered if the growing number of scandals regarding food contamination would have any effect on the elections but, surprisingly, most saw no effect. At home fingers would be pointed at the government for a lack of oversight in food inspection. Next we talked about bank transfer swindles. An example was a phone call coming from someone claiming to be from the government claiming unpaid health insurance premiums or taxes that must be transferred directly from the persons account. As a consequence of these swindles, Hiroshi told us that the government has instituted a law that bans the use of cell phones around ATMs. No one in class had yet to experience this fraud but Yuuca had received an overseas fraud attempt by a caller claiming to offer an American Green card for a sum to be charged to her credit card.
