Step 2B
Good evening everyone. How are you all doing? Well, tonight we had a BIG surprise! Yes, Shiho K. came to our class after a very, very, very long time. It was great seeing her and she even said that she would try to come to class more often. I really hope so! And Akihiro also came to class tonight after being absent for a few weeks. Unfortunately, Orie, Shiho S., Hiroyuki, and Chiemi were all absent tonight. Too bad! Anyway, we started the class with pair discussions and then did a listening exercise. After that you created your own original conversations and presented them to the class. Great job everyone. Finally, we did the pronunciation section for Unit 3 and practiced the grammar once more in the communication activity section of the textbook. We will try to finish this unit next class! Next week is a holiday, so I'll see you all in two weeks.... I HOPE!

Hello Masaki, how are you? Wow, you sent me quite a long message this time. I was so surprised to find it in my inbox. Thank you!
I was glad to hear that your lecture was successful. I didn't realize that a big part of the event took place outside. With this weather, it was bad timing in a way. But it sounds like despite the bad weather, you had a great time and wonderful experience.
I also think it was great that you had a chance to use English. You should be proud of your English ability because you've improved greatly over only a short time.
So when is the next time you'll participate in this kind of event? Next year? If so, then you have an entire year to try and improve your English more so that you can communicate even more smoothly next time.
Oh, and thank you so much for your supportive words about the mama-chari race. I will do my best! This is my second time, so I'm not as nervous as I was last year!
Bye for now!
Good evening, what's up?
Thank you for your answer. You gave me a good sugesstion.
I undersand that how to use the difference way as following.
(1) for someone : means making sure against my actions.
"Can I smoke (around this area)?"
(2) for ourselves : means asking permission clealy against you. So these sound polite.
"Do you mind if I smoke (here in your room)?","Is it okay if I smoke (here in your room)?" or "May I smoke (here in your room)?"
Of course, we can use "Can I smoke in your room?". In this case sounds friendly.
Am I correct? Do I close to your idea?
I don't mind detail for the present and I've never faced a trouble so far.
However, I meet many similar grammars when I study English.
It's interesting. Also makes me confused from time to time. For exmple,
think has : wish, hope, sure, guess, afraid, awful, etc.
surpirse has: amaize, shock, ete.
look has: watch, see, note, etc.
Anyway, the question I asked you this time might be a little hard for the native speakers like you.
Maybe generally speaking, natives have no awareness when they're talkig.
If it was Japanese, I couldn't explain well.
Thank you again for your message.
By the way, I have had a big sucsess in JICA's lecture!
Except raining weather.
And I appreciated it for your encourage message.
Actually, our program almost held in outdoor.
We're enjoying fishing, crafting, building fire from woods for cooking, with elementary scholl students.
We're troubled by terrible rain like cats and dogs sometimes.
All of us spent a full time, though, we're rally tired.
I can use English a little bit. It was verry good.
But then, what do you think what happen?
The trainees misunderstood that I spoke English, and one of them spoke to me as same as usual in English.
Wait a moment! I can't hear you. You are too fast, too much vocabulary.
After all, I understood that she looked for a vending machine to drink.
I want to talk with them more directly without an interpreter.
At least I can get twice information than now.
I heard they also made an effort to learn English since prtty young days.
I wish my English improve quickly. Keep up myself!
And now, I heard that you'll run to race by bike all over Saturday night.
I've attended that meetig twice past.
I want to run with JOY team, unfortunately I have to prepare for the coming exam. Too bad.
Good luck, Joe!
See you next Monday of only special your day!
Hello Masaki, how are you doing? Busy as usual is my guess!
I'm doing well. I just remembered that I wouldn't be seeing any of my Monday students today, including you, because of the holiday. What a shame!
So your lecture will take place tomorrow, hey? I wish you all the best with your lecture this time around. I'm sure you will do a great job though.
By the way, the expressions "Could I ... ?" and "Can I ... ?" are generally used when we want to do something for someone (like help them with their work or something). "Do you mind if I ... ?" and "Is it OK if I ... ?" are used when we want to do something for ourselves, but we want permission to do it. "May I ... ?" can be used in both ways, but is generally used to ask permission.
It's difficult for me to explain the differences between all these combinations of expressions since I use them naturally without even thinking of their meanings. And I may be wrong with my explanation here. However, I hope it will at least help you out a little. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Take care and have a good week. And good luck once again with your lecture. Don't worry too much, and just have a good time. Bye for now!
Hello, Joe! How're you doing today?
Thank you for the class about 'Making Requests' & 'Asking For Permission'.
And also 'Phrasal Verb'.
So we have just learned about askinig for permission as follows:
(1) "Do you mind if I...?", "Is it OK if I...?"
And we also know that these phases as follws:
(2) "Could I...?"
(3) "May I...?"
I guess they seem like almost the same using.
What is the defferece between (1) and (2)or(3)?
Could you please tell me the answer?
BTW
I'm going to give a lecture for JICA trainees (6 person came from East Europe & India) with my team members on coming 22nd.
So I'm being busy to get ready for them over this weekend.
They arrived at Obihiro on last Sunday, and I went listenig to their presentation yesterday.
They are all great specialists and quite friendly.
I'm looking forward to seeing again soon.
Have a nice weekend! Bye and see you next two week!
