It's been awhile since I've had the chance to visit Obihiro and as 2007 draws to a close, I find myself thinking back fondly to my three wonderful years at Joy.
To be honest, at first I doubted the wisdom of signing on with Joy Academy. I had spent three years in Sapporo teaching English and, to be blunt, moving to Tokachi seemed a bit like being exiled to Siberia. But as I talked with Urashima-san and David about Joy and their vision for English education, I sensed a commitment and professionalism that one simply doesn't find in the run-of-the-mill "eikaiwa" school. It didn't take long for me to realize I'd stumbled onto something special.
I owe everyone associated with Joy, colleagues and students alike, a debt of gratitude. You've done the near-impossible: created a place of real learning that's more home than mere school. Besides introducing me to my future wife, former English House Joy teacher Kotomi Tsukaya, you helped me broaden my horizons personally and professionally. It was at Joy that I found a knack for editing and writing. You've given me enduring friendships and helped me discover and develop gifts I never knew I had.
I can say without hesitation or hyperbole that my experience at Joy was life-changing. Thanks again.
All the best. And here's to the next 30 years!
