Well, we went over the homework, but Iku was the only person who as here last class. It was pretty easy, so it didn't take long to do.
The lesson was set in a restaurant and different problems you might have. Both Shunsuke and Iku have had problems, but Yoko has been lucky and not had any so far. Iku's problem was in Hawaii when a food server automatically added on the tip. They complained about it and didn't pay it. My wife had something similar happen to her in New York.
The homework for next week is to do the writing exercises on page 37. Do forget we still have one more class next week.
Thanks to visitors we have had a little larger class that last two week. Hopefully, the same thing will happen for the last two classes. Remember there are no classes next week.
We went over the homework and finished up the last part of the lesson we were working on last week. The theme of the new lesson was dreams and there was a reading and listening exercise on interpreting them. If you want to learn more about it go here.
We ended up with 4 people tonight because Uro joined us from one of Joe's classes. He used to take my class, so it was nice to see him again. Susumu has been busy with several different trips. It sounds like he will be around for awhile.
There wasn't any homework to check so we jumped into the new lesson. In one part we talked about promises and did a reading about the ones that are commonly broken. There were a couple that seemed to be more common in North American than Japan.
The homework for next week is 3 b & c on page and Grammar Bank 3C on pages 130-131.
Trish said that last week there were only two students and it was the same this week, too. Last week in the comments Kieko mentioned that she wouldn't be able to come because of her pregnancy. Remember Keiko to start speaking English to the baby now.
Maki has been gone for several weeks, but I am sure she will be back next week. Now I am a positive thinker. Tonight's lesson was was about positive and negative thinking. I am pretty sure everyone in this class is a positive thinker. If you aren't the tips in the book might help you out.
There is no homework for next week, but we will talk about more about positive thinking.
Kunio, from Joe's class, was here for a make up and it was his first time to attend this class. Maki was back, but Kieko wasn't here to share her news. Susumu was also absent, so we couldn't hear about his trip to Taipei. Maybe he can tell you about it the first class after summer vacation. Check back here during the break and see if I have posted something from the States.
Kieko was back tonight after about a month break. She shared some big news with us, but Maki wasn't here, so I will let Kieko tell her next class.
The homework was to bring some photos and both Shunsuke and Susumu brought some interesting ones. Susumu brought some slides of a trip he made to the Himalayas to see Mt, Everest. The shots of the plane and runway were pretty dramatic. After talking about his photos we talked a little bit about trains and traveling between Sapporo and Obihiro in the old days. Susumu said it was nice to be able to ride in the dinning car. Both Shunsuke and Kieko didn't know that there used to be a dinning car on the that line.
The homework for next class is pp130-31 3A & B. We will also get to hear a little bit about Taiwan.
Yea! Three people showed up tonight. We started up where left off three weeks ago and people weren't too rusty. We talked about hotel check-in and the different steps involved. There isn't a very big difference between Japan and overseas. In the conversation Maki wanted to know how to say "bed cover" in English and at first I couldn't remember. I was talking about something else when it finally hit me. It is bedspread. Sometimes I just can't come up with the word I want.
The homework for next week is to bring your favorite photo and be ready to tell the class about it and why it is your favorite.
Well Shunsuke and Susumu called and said they would be absent this evening. Right now I am waiting to see if Maki or Kieko will show up. I will update later. I am so lonely I could cry. It looks like no one is going to come tonight. See you in July.
Susumu was back from his trip and he shared some of his experiences. He had several problems, but there were many good points also. Shunsuke ended up missing the eiken test because the plane he was to come back on from Tokyo had engine trouble. He didn't get back until later in the afternoon.
We did some work with but, although so and because. Part of the activity was an interesting story that has a reading and listening section. For homework next week you need to write the conversation that Jamie and Hannah have at the hospital. If Kieko wants to do the homework, she can look at page 119.
It was only Kieko for the first 40 minutes, but then Shunsuke came rushing in. He got delayed at the university because he was helping another student with a computer problem. We talked about his interview in Tokyo last week (not Sapporo). He is pretty confident that he will get the position.
After that we did the same exercise as last week because they were both absent. We will start with Lesson 2D next week.
Only Susumu and Maki tonight. Shunsuke had to make a trip to Sapporo for an interview about the JICA project he is involved with and I don't know about Kieko. I am sure she will post a comment and let us know. We finished up the lesson from last week and did the listening exercise of the song Imagine by John Lennon. In one part of the homework there was a question about Sting's job before he became a singer. I had no idea, but I am not a big Sting fan. Maki said he was a high school teacher and she was correct.
At the end of class Susumu said he would be absent next week because he is going to St. Petersburg, Russia. Maki was very excited to hear this because it is a place she would really like to go someday. We can get all the details in two weeks.
Susumu had a good time on his trip to Yamagata and he said the train part of the trip went smoothly. He was the only person who did anything special. Everyone else said they worked or stayed home.
We went over the homework and then started the new lesson. The theme tonight was music and there was a short quiz. The people in this class don't know much music trivia. I think people would have been lucky to get over 50% of the answers correct.
The homework for next week is pp. 128 and 129 and we will start with #5 on page 21.
Our new classmate joined us this evening, so now we are up to 4 people. It will take the pressure off of Maki to always show up for class. Maki was absent tonight, but I am sure she isn't made at Kieko for her being absent last week.
We did some quick self-introductions and then looked over the homework which was to think about the questions about your last vacation. I was Kieko's partner, so we talked about her honeymoon and my trip to Vietnam.
Kieko you were right, I did forget to post something last week. I thought maybe I had written something, but not published it. There was nothing in the entry list. All I can say is that I forgot.
We had Yuko joining us tonight and it was her last class. She was transferred to a new school in Toyokoro in April which makes it hard for her to come to JOY for class. She will try to come to special events when she can.
We worked on the practical English page tonight. This section of the book is based on a story from an earlier book. The listening was a review of that story, so we could get to know the characters. The setting was at an airport and the immigration procedures. Kieko had an interesting story about immigration. She said it was the trouble at American immigration that prompted her to come to JOY to study English. When she went to the States she was asked questions by the immigration officer, but she couldn't answer. She just froze! After that she decided that when she got back to Japan she would study English.
Another part of the lesson was what you do and say when you meet someone at the airport. Maki made a good point that people in some countries hug and kiss. Kieko said she had never seen that at the Obihiro-Tokachi Airport. I told her she had never seen me when my wife picks me up at the airport. I always give her a hug. When I suggested she try it the next time she picks up her husband, she just laughed.
There is a lot of homework for next week. You need to write and e-mail like the one on page 13 introducing yourself. Also do the exercises on pp. 14 and 15. You don't need to worry about the "Can you understand these people?" section because it is a listening exercise.
Keiko was explaining about the person she thought would be a good match for Shunsuke just as he ran into the room. We started over so that he could get all the details. The person he recommended for Maki turned out to be his married brother! Not the best choice and Kieko didn't have anyone.
We went on to the next lesson in the book and looked at the Toulouse-Lautrec painting Moulin Rouge. We also listened to the song and kept laughing at the name of the song. I had never heard it before. It was from the musical Hair.
At the beginning of class we talked about computers and the importance of backing up your data. The topic came up because Maki had some problems last week and lost some music because she hadn't backed up everything. Kieko didn't think she had ever backed up her computer, but thinks her husband might do it. Shunsuke does back ups, but it doesn't sound like it is on a regular basis.
We moved on to lesson 1B and looked at the idea of picking a girlfriend for someone. The homework for next week is to think of a person you know who might be a good match for your single classmates. Kieko will need to think of someone for Maki and Shunsuke. Look at #6 on page 7 for help.
We are starting off with a small class again this term. The same thing happened last year, but we slowly gained more students as the year went on. I hope the same thing happens this year.
We started with the textbook and looked at the different sections. I think the first few lessons will be good review and the book will quickly get more difficult. If you want to check out the book's website you can go here.
There is no homework for next week, but I am sure we will have some almost every week after this.
Today was the last class and everyone was here except for Midori. We spent some time talking about news in Hokkaido. Paul got another short lesson on Japan.
We worked with adjectives ending in ed and ing and people were still having some trouble. I will try to focus on this at the beginning of the next class.
I am not sure if we have any new students in this class next term, but I think we might have one or two.
Today was our last class and everyone ended up with perfect attendance. Many of you had to use the Pops English class to make it, but you did. I think is one of the few times where I had every student in a class have perfect attendance.
We went over the homework and people did a great job. Kazue was able to stump us all with her movie, A Knight's Tale. I had never heard of it, but I will check the movie rental store this weekend to see if I can find it. We spent a lot of time talking about movies, but we did do one more exercise. If you want, you can send me your last homework by e-mail.
Today was a first because we had everyone here tonight. Out of 20 lessons so far this was the first time! Paul was here so we were able to have an even number for activities.
I was surprised that no one had noticed the closet before. Shunsuke did the best at guessing what was inside. It was fun speculating what people are going to do this coming holiday and weekend. Kieko didn't guess correctly about Maki and I didn't either. She usually has to work on weekends and holidays, so I assumed it would be the same on Thursday. She said she was going to the hair salon, so we can expect a new look next week. Shunsuke will be moving to a new apartment and Midori is going to a hot spring with a friend. Kieko will be doing housework and Yoshiko will going skiing, but go to work after she gets back. I guess I will be the only one not doing anything this holiday.
A few people sent last week's homework for a second check and Fumiko tried the online exercises that I linked to last week.
We started talking about movies and we looked at the different types. I forgot to mention this site in class, but if you want to find out something about an actor or a movie it is the place to go.
At first I wasn't planning on giving you any homework this week, but then you all wanted some so here you go. First do 1C on page 100, but remember we are going to have people guess the movie that you are talking about. It is important that you don't tell anyone at the beginning of class what movie you picked. Also do the Vocabulary Notebook on page 106.
Only Kieko and Yoshiko tonight. Shunsuke called saying he probably couldn't make it because he was working on an experiment. Midori told me last week that she would be gone tonight and probably next week, too. I am not sure what happened to Maki.
We talked about several things while waiting to see if other people would show up. And Kieko surprised us with the news that a skeleton had been found in a nearby town. The problem was she couldn't remember which town for sure. I guess I will have to keep an eye on the news to get more details.
We went over the homework and then practiced ways to make polite requests. It is tough to get those longer sentences correct. The homework for next week is to write a movie or CD review. Use the ones on p. 104 as examples, but remember if you write about a movie don't give away the ending.
Everyone was back this week and there were a variety of topics in the warm up period. Yoko told us she got a new washing machine because her 18 year-old one died. Mika mentioned that she had gone to a movie with her husband and Tomoe said she had never been to a movie with hers. Mika then asked where they went on dates before the got married. It took awhile, but we finally go the answer from her.
Kazue and Fumiko were talking about one of their favorite subjects -- movies. I guess they announced that they are going to be making another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Fumiko also said that her husband surprised her with flowers on Girls Day last Monday.
We went over the homework and it took a little longer than I thought it would. It is a difficult grammar pattern, so I understand. Remember, if you want me to look at your sentences again, send them to me by e-mail.
We jumped up to Unit 10 and worked with present perfect continuous and present perfect. The homework for next week is to do these drills here and here.
It is the second week that Yoshiko has been absent. I spoke with her last week when she was here for a make up class and she said she has to work a lot of overtime this month.
Kieko was back tonight and her postcard arrived this afternoon. She had a cold, so she wasn't in the best of shape. She enjoyed her trip to Pamalican Island and from looking at the site I can see why.
We started the unit about movies and the first exercise was guessing the type of movie from the description. They had a picture from the movie North by Northwest, but a couple people haven't seen it. I highly recommend watching it, if you haven't already.
I mentioned the site The Internet Movie Database and I linked to it earlier. If you have any movie questions, this the place to go.
The homework for next week is to do the
There were three people absent today which was really unusual for this class. Luckily, Yoshie and Keiko were here. Keiko was snowed in like me last Sunday. She said there was a big snow drift between her house and the road and they couldn't get out until they cleared away the snow. Yoshie said that her husband changed cars and went from a big SUV to a K-car. The difference in the car tax is amazing. I was able to share my prediction that the K-car tax will be going up in the next year or so because the government is going to want to make up for the shortfall in revenue from people switching to the cheaper cars.
We went over the homework and it took a little longer than I thought it would. There were some surprising answers and I can learn a lot about people from the answers they give to these types of questions. We talked about the word remind and I forgot to mention that it is also used with to.
Today's lesson was about giving advice and we looked at the different ways to do it. We were running out of time, so we didn't get to several parts. The homework for next week is to do 1B on page 80. We will start with #2 on page 81. I also hope to start Unit 10 next week. Unit 10 will be the last unit for this term.
Too bad Kieko wasn't here tonight because we were really looking forward to hearing about her honeymoon. Maybe next week she can come next week or she can post a comment. Shunsuke got stuck on the train coming back from Sapporo on Saturday because of the blizzard. He said it took almost 20 hours to get back to Obihiro. Maki also had the blizzard to thank for getting the night off on Saturday. The weather was so bad that they closed the events at Tokachikawa Hot Spring.
We skipped up to Unit 10 and worked with present perfect continuous and present perfect. You can do some drills here and here.
There is no homework for next week.
There were a lot of good examples of the patterns in the homework that you did and several of you even did the extra work that I assigned at the end of class. There were still a few problems, so send your sentences by e-mail and I will check them.
The homework for next week is to do the Vocabulary Notebook and write your answers for the questions in 3A on page 79.
It was fun talking to night about the advice and regrets. For Yoshiko it was difficult to give advice because she has a very stress free approach to live. Maki doesn't like to give advice and would only do it for causal things like restaurants or movies.
Next week we are going to jump to Unit 10 and look at the Before you begin ... questions on the intro page.
People's rankings of the important things in their lives were very similar, but different from the Monday night class. In this class family was either #1 or 2, but in the Monday night class it was #3 or 4. In both classes career and physical appearance were rated at the bottom.
The grammar point today was Future/Present Unreal Conditional and in the note it mentioned using, I wish I was .... in conversation and I wish I were in writing. I did the check with MS Word and it does flag the I wish I was .... as being incorrect.
The homework for next week is to write 5 sets of sentences like the ones in 2A on page 77. The bonus homework is to make a I wish... sentence for everyday of the coming week. Finally Tomoe is going to find out why the fruit she brought has that name.
I was very impressed again with how well you did on the homework. Everyone did a good job using the grammar patterns that we have been studying for the past several weeks. Keep up the good work.
We did the listening exercise and then talked about the characteristics that someone should look for in their partner. There were a lot of similar answers, but usually one or two that were different. The homework for next week is to do the Before you begin... on the Unit 8 page.
Yoko said she might go see the movie American Gangster that was recommended by a friend and Fumiko said that Kazue also recommended it. If Noriko is feeling better this weekend, maybe we can go see it. Now that we get the special discount we don't hesitate to go see movies. Before we only went to moives that wouldn't look as good on TV such as Harry Potter or Lord of the Ring.
It was nice to Midori back after almost a month and Shunsuke also was able to make it tonight. We practiced giving advice and commenting on a possibility or suggestion. We will do more with them both in the next class, which will be on the 18th.
The homework for the next class is to do 1B on page 80 and I will prepare some some situations so that you can comment my ideas.
I mentioned the Al Gore joke in class, but no one had heard about it. I looked on the net, but couldn't find anything. Maybe you will have better luck.
I was very impressed with the way people were trying to use the grammar points we have been studying for the last few weeks. Getting the nuance right when using the phrasal verbs can be tough, but don't give up.
We did the listening exercise and the the speed reading. You thought 3 minutes wasn't enough time, but you all were able to finish the reading and answer most of the questions correctly. The homework for next week is to write about your circle of friends. Try to write about six people and use page 66 as an example.
Just three people tonight. Shunsuke planned on coming, but his research must have taken longer than he thought. We talked a little bit about the news and what people have been up to. After that we went over the homework and talked about people's wishes. There were some very interesting ones, especially Maki's.
In tonight's lesson we focused on different dilemmas and what people would do. The three of you gave petty much the same answers for all of the situations. When I pressed you about never loaning money to friends, you did say you would for small things, but not for something like an MP3 player.
The homework is think of what you do in the situations in 3A and why you would do that. Also do the Vocabulary Notebook on page 84.
We talked a little about the homework and how people didn't really use relative clauses or phrasal verbs. In the talking about what people did on the weekend Yoko did use a relative clause to report what Tomoe did. That is what you should try to do in the coming weeks.
I was surprised that Kazue and Fumiko didn't go to the movie Sweeney Todd on the weekend because they are both big Johnny Depp fans
Today's lesson focused on the conversation strategy of softening comments. The book gave some very good examples. The homework for next week is to do 2A and B on page 71 and don't look at Lesson D on pp. 72-73.
It was nice to have almost everyone back tonight. It has been awhile since we have had this many people. Kieko and Maki were able catch up with what they each have been doing. The last time they had a chance to talk to each other was back in December.
We started Unit 8 and talked about the priorities in our lives. I was surprised that career was number 5 for everyone, but Miki. The top three were pretty much the same, happiness, friends and family, except for Maki who put wealth as number 1.
We worked with wishes and imaginary situations or events (scroll down the page). People had a some trouble with it and if you want to practice some more you can go here. The homework is to think a wish that you have for your career. Use the pattern like the one in 2A on page 77.
Yoko was absent today, but Yoshie was here for a make up. Tomoe was a little late because she needed to get her daughters ready to come with her. They will be on winter vacation until next week. Mika got her electric piano back up to 2nd floor of her house, but her husband had to ask a co-worker for a hand.
We went over the homework and it took longer than I thought it would, but people had some interesting sentences. We moved on to the next lesson and worked with phrasal verbs. You can do more practice here and here.
The homework for next week is Vocabulary Notebook on page 74 and post your opinions about the six sentences in 2A on page 69. Try to use phrasal verbs and relative clauses if you can.
A small class tonight. Yoshiko was here and Yoko from the morning 3M class was here for a make up class. Midori and Shunsuke both told me they would be absent tonight, but I don't know why the others were gone. We talked about the news and then jumped into the lesson. The reading was about a special website. We also did the listening exercise and talked about the important points to look for in a life partner. We were pretty much in agreement with the main four, but the fifth one was different.
We had a some time left at the end of the class, so we made some predictions for 2008. I predicted that Japan will set record in winning medals in the Beijing Olympics. Yoshiko and Yoko thought I was crazy.
The homework for next week is to do #3 on page 67. You will share the information with your classmates next week.
It sounds like Yoko had the busiest New Year's. Her family has a tradition of going bowling and karaoke and they had a really good time. They sang karaoke for two hours, but she didn't sing any English songs.
We went over the homework and there were a few trouble spots. If there were parts you had trouble with you should go back to those pages and review them again. After that we moved on to Unit 7, which is about relationships. We looked briefly at relative clauses. The homework for next week is to do 2A & B on page 67.
Too bad Miki and Maki weren't here tonight because now they missed out on the attendance lottery. Maybe next year. No one did anything special during the vacation. Everyone stayed in Tokachi, watched TV, listened to music and relaxed.
We went over the homework and then worked on the conversation strategy of softening comments. The book introduced some good phrases. We also looked at using though for showing contrasting ideas. The homework for next week is to write about three people you enjoy meeting and some contrasting ideas about them. Also say why you enjoy meeting them.
Maki wasn't able to make to the last class of the year so I hope she can make it to the Christmas party. If she can make it, it will give her a chance to meet Yuki. I am really looking forward to meeting Yuki and hearing how her married life is going.
We went over the homework, but people thought it was kind of difficult. You did need to be a little more creative than usual, but you still came up with some interesting sentences.
The theme of the new lesson was dating and the grammar point was phrasal verbs. This link will take you to an online dictionary. You can do more practice here. The homework for the next class is the Vocabulary Notebook
There was some very good advice for getting organized and I thought Tomoe's request for help was very good. It sounds like Mika could be a professional organizer!
We talked about planning a class party and people did a could job using the future tense. Kazue kind of took charge as the organizer. She must have a lot of experience planning parties. Today was the last class of 2007 because next week is the Christmas party. The winter vacation homework is to do the review unit on pages 63 and 64.
It was nice to have Miki and Midori back tonight. It is too bad that Shunsuke and Kieko couldn't make it. It would be nice to have a full class again.
We went over the homework, but not everyone had finished it yet, so it took a little longer than I had planned. If there were any parts of the review exercise that you found difficult you should go back and take a look at those pages.
We started Unit 7 which is about relationships. The grammar point was relative clauses. The homework for next week is to do 2B on page 67.
Everyone did an excellent job with the homework even though there was a question about who the advice was for. After going over the homework we started talking about clutter. This was a new word for everyone, but people understood the meaning after hearing my example sentence. It seems that Yoko is the only really organized person in this class. She said she doesn't have a problem with clutter. The homework for next week is for you to post a question in the comments asking for advice on how to solve a clutter problem (like in the textbook). Then read your classmates' questions and write some advice on a piece of paper to bring to class next week. I look forward to reading your questions and hearing your advice.
A small class tonight because both Miki and Midori were absent. There was no homework to check so we talked about different things from the news and what people did on the weekend. After practicing ending conversations again we moved on to talk about clutter and the ways to deal with it. It seems that Kieko is the only really organized person in the class. We also talked about ways to get rid of things in Obihiro, but there don't seem to be many places where you can donate things.
At the end we did an exercise to make plans for a party. The two groups made a plan and then I picked the one I thought sounded most interesting. Shunsuke and Yoshiko had the best one I thought, but that is only if you enjoy drinking. In their talk they mentioned a new snack and it is something that Maki sells at the Otufuke Road Station. I can't remember the name so I hope someone will put it in the comments.
The homework for next week is to do the Checkpoint on pages 63-64.
Everyone sent the homework by e-mail and did a much better job. There were still some problems with exercise 2 in the Vocabulary Notebook, but I think you have the idea on how to paraphrase something.
We did the exercise on how to end conversations and there were some very useful tips with some very natural sentences. In the sample conversation there was the phrase "being assertive" and people didn't know the word "assertive". This link will take you to a page about assertiveness.
The homework for next week is the handout I gave you and don't read the article on page 60. Also good luck with practicing the songs.
A another new student joined us this evening. Yoshiko isn't really a new student because she studied at JOY several years ago. It is nice to have her back. Maki was back and she had a good time in New York. Midori was also back and she said she was really busy last week.
Kieko was the only person who was here last week, so she was the only one with handout that I gave as homework. She did a great job with the advice and she even gave advice for two of the problems. The other students did the last two and also had some good ideas.
We started the new lesson and looked at the ways to end conversations. There were some very good suggestions. In the sample conversation there was the part about being "assertive" and people thought that sounded strange. This link will take you to some information about assertiveness training.
There is no homework for next week.
Everyone thought that the homework was really hard and for next week you need to do two of the parts again. Remember to send me an e-mail with your sentences for #2 on page 57 and then look at #2 on page 62 one more time.
We didn't make it as far as I had hoped again this week, so next week we will start with Lesson C on page 58.
If everyone was disappointed that Maki wasn't here tonight. We all wanted to hear about her trip to New York. I guess we will just have to wait until next week. You can also ask about my trip.
We went over the homework, but there was a lot of trouble with the Vocabulary Notebook part because people had difficulty with the paraphrasing. After going over the homework we practiced giving advice. The problems people had were interesting and there was some good advice. I was able to help Shunsuke a little I think and he will keep us posted on his progress. Maki might be able to help him out, too.
The homework is to pick two of the problems on the handout I gave you and write some advice to the person.
We didn't make it as far as I had hoped in this class, but we did get a lot of practice with the role playing. There were a lot of good conversations.
After we finished 6A we moved on 6B and read advice from the life coach. No one had ever heard of a life coach, so to learn more go here.
The homework for next week is to #2 on page 57 and the Vocabulary Notebook on page 62.
To bad for Maki that this had to happen while she was in New York. I wonder if she was able to see any shows. I am sure we will get to hear all about her trip next week.
We worked with make and do tonight. I think people learned a lot of new phrases. You can practice more here. The homework for next week is #2 on page 57 and the Vocabulary Notebook on page 62.
There were some good descriptions of Japanese snacks. I mentioned this site and it has a lot of interesting information about Japanese foods.
We talked about making plans and using the future tense. If you want to do more practice go here.
The homework is to do #2 on page 55 and go over the conversation on page 54. You need to think of how to do Brandon's part.
Finally, everyone has met everyone else in this class. I had thought it had already happened until Kieko asked if Midori was a visitor or new student. It then clicked that they hadn't met each other yet. Midori had been sick and Kieko had been away for her wedding. Now everything is set.
Only Kieko had the homework done and she did a good job with the description of sembei. I found this interesting site that has information on many kinds of Japanese food.
After talking about snacks we moved on to the new unit and looked at the lesson on making plans. The grammar point was on using the future tense. I am came across this interesting site that uses cartoons to illustrate the points.
The homework for next week is to #2 on page 55.
Keiko was here for a make up today, so everyone had a partner. We did the free talk activity and it was a good review of the patterns we learned in this unit. We also did the reading and I gave you five minutes, but I it was too long. I watching people I think everyone was done in four minutes.
After the reading we did the listening about snacks and talked a little bit about people's favorite snacks. Most of the people in this class like sweet snacks. The homework for next week is to write about a popular Japanese snack. Look at the example in the book to see how it should be done.
Ayumi and Naoyuki were here for make up classes tonight. Ayumi is usually in Urashima-san's News English class, so coming to a conversation class was a change for her. She said after class that she had had a good time.
We talked about the different kinds of snacks and then people talked about their favorites. One of the ones in the book was French fries and it gave some examples of different ways of eating them. Here is a link to the French-Canadian style. I have never had them, but I would like to try them this way someday.
I am looking forward to reading your descriptions of your favorite Japanese snack.
Everyone kept a much more detailed food diary than I expected. Having all the information did make it easier to use the quantifiers. After checking the homework we moved on to the new lesson. We practiced polite refusals and letting other people make a decision. The dialogue was a good example that English isn't always straight yes or no.
The homework for next week is pretty easy. All you have to do is not worry about not doing the reading on the next page in the textbook. We will read it in class next week.
We are still trying to get everyone to meet in this class. Miki and Midori finally met tonight, but Shunsuke and Kieko still haven't met Midori.
Miki really enjoyed meeting Bonnie Pink. I don't remember all the details of the contest she won to get this chance, so maybe Miki I can give us some more details in the comments.
We practiced letting other people make a decision. There are a few points to be careful about, but everyone caught on really quickly. We will do a little more with this next week. The homework is the same as last week.
Today we had two special guests. Two first year students from Sanjo High School were here as part of a career research project. They spoke with Urashima-san for an hour or so before the class. I think they had a good time and hopefully, they weren't scared away from following their dreams.
We continued talking about quantifiers. There was a little bit of trouble with enough and not enough. You can practice more here or here
The homework for next week is to keep a food diary again, but this time it should be for a week.
Kieko was back this week and she said she saw the Ham Fighters game on Sunday. She was disappointed that they lost. They did win tonight, so that was good news. Miki, our other new student, joined us tonight and hopefully, in the coming weeks everyone will be here. Kieko did say that she will be absent next week because she is going to Okinawa for her wedding ceremony and honeymoon. She said that Yuki also signed all the documents to get married last week and will be having her wedding ceremony next month.
We continued talking about food and different cooking styles. The grammar focus was on too much, too many and enough. There are referred to as quantifiers. If you want to practice more go here.
The homework for next week is to do the vocabulary notebook on page 52.
Kazue did a make up class last night and Mika had a toothache today. I shared the postcard with you that she sent from Wakkanai. Maybe next week we can hear about her trip.
We went over the homework and people's food diaries. Tomei has a really healthy diet. After that we looked at the new lesson and focused on the different cooking styles. There was a question about the difference between bake and roast. One of the points about roasting meat is getting the crisp outside, but juicy inside. This article (difficult) is about traditional roasting techniques.
The homework for next week is to do is to do #4 on page 47 and the Vocabulary Notebook on page 52.
It was nice to have everyone back for the new term. I am glad that you enjoyed the party and had a chance to speak a lot of English. Everyone got very excited when I said that I was thinking about not giving homework this term. After seeing your reaction I changed my mind and we will continue to have homework every week.
We talked about countable and uncountable nouns. The exercise gave you a little trouble. If you want to practice more go here.
The homework for next week is to keep a food diary for the 6th 7th and 8th. We will use the information at the beginning of the next class.
We welcomed Midori to the class tonight. She is the only new student this term. Kieko couldn't make it tonight. I was hoping that she would be here because she could have told you how delicious everything was.
Speaking of food, tonight's lesson was about healthy food. In the lesson we talked about countable and uncountable nouns. The ones that gave people the most trouble were the ones that could be both.
I mentioned some of the popular diets in the States and one of them was the Atkin's Diet and the other was the South Beach Diet.
The homework for next class is to keep a food diary for 3 days (6th, 7th and 8th). We will use the information to practice the countable and uncountable nouns.
The childhood memories that you wrote about were very interesting. Only Kazue guessed everyone correctly. The issue about Valentine's Day was funny. Everyone, but Kazue, thought it had to be Mika because she is the youngest person in the class. They all the thought the custom of giving chocolate to boy's on Valentine's Day was a very new custom. I wonder if anyone can find out when it actually started in Japan.
After we finished the listening exercise you had an opportunity to practice using some of the conversation strategies that were in the book. You did okay, but you still need to work on them some more. We will focus on them more next semester.
Update: If you look in the comments you will see that Fumiko found the answer to my question.
Well, tonight was our last class, but Yumi and Shunosuke couldn't make it, but we did have Teruyasu here for a make up class. After checking the homework we did the conversation exercise again. This time I did it a little differently. I kept track of how many times you used the different conversation strategies that we studied this term and when you spoke Japanese. Maki did a good job in using the strategies, but canceled herself out by using more Japanese.
I hope to see you at some of the events next week.
I really worried after getting everyone's comments yesterday. One nobody would show up or if you did show up you would only have a few lines. Well, you all did a great job and Yoko almost hit 3 minutes right on the nose. She was only 2 seconds off. I know you thought it was hard, but it was good practice.
I am looking forward to your reading your childhood memories. You can read more about riding shotgun here.
Two people for a make up class today and Shunsuke was able to come after all. He had good news. He passed his test and will be starting the doctoral course at Chikudai this fall I think. Sachi, one of the people doing a make up class, told us she won a one night stay at the Westin Hotel in Tokyo. She had entered a contest for cafe latte campaign and she said she drank over 60 cups.
We went over the reading quickly and talked about fights and arguments we had with siblings when we were younger. The reading talked about Rhonda's fights with her brother over riding in the front seat of the car. I mentioned that it was also called riding shotgun, but no one had ever heard of that before. This article will give you all the information you need.
The homework is to do 2D on page 41. Try to use the information in the Help Note. Remember we will be having class next week even though it is a national holiday.
When I was going up the stairs today I heard a lot of laughter coming from the classroom, but I wasn't sure what was going on. I did hear Yoko's name a few times. When I got in the room I understood immediately because there were seven people. Last week Yoko promised to be my partner if there was an odd number of people because she only thought Keiko was coming for a make up class. Well, she was surprised to find out that Yoshie came today for a make up class, too. Yoko is always worried about being my partner for the warm up exercise, but she always does a very good job.
We continued practicing giving opinions and agreeing or disagreeing. People did a much better job with the intonation and stress this week. We worked a little bit on holding your place in a conversation, but that still needs a little more work.
The homework for next week is to prepare a 3-minute talk about one of the topics in #3. You will have a chance to listen to everyone's opinion next week.
Minori and Hitoshi, two of Joe's students, were here for a make up class, but Yuki was absent. Kieko said that Yuki was too tired. Maybe she did too many sessions of Billy's Boot Camp! :)
There was a little bit of a misunderstanding about the homework and as usual Maki said there was no homework. People practiced giving their opinions, but the agreeing part needs some work. The feeling was missing and it is something we will work on next week a little more. The homework for next week is to write about your family. Look at the Free talk section and pick a topic or two to write about.
Keiko was here from the other Step 3 morning class, so we had an even number. Nobody seemed disappointed that they didn't get to be my partner this week. Yoko volunteered to be my partner next week if there is an odd number of students.
We looked at the lesson about giving opinions and agreeing with them. You need to work a little more on your stress of the words. In the conversation there was an example of a rhetorical question and I think you understood how to use them after I finished my explanation.
We will go over the sample conversation again next week. The homework for next week is to do #1B and #3.
Well, the visitors outnumbered the regulars tonight. I am not too sure what happened to Yuki, but Yumi and Shunsuke were both busy at work.
We practiced using used to and then moved on to the new lesson. In this lesson we practiced giving opinions and then how to agree with them. We split on whether teachers should give more or less homework.
The homework for next week is to finish last week's homework and then think of what your opinion is for the points in #3 on page 39. Remember that you can sign up for classes next week.
Yoshie joined us for a make up class today and she was lucky once again because both Tomoe and Mika had brought some things from their trips to share with the class. The same thing happened the last time she did a make up class.
We went over the homework and there were some very interesting "demands" that parents make of their children. The other part of the homework I asked you to send to me by e-mail because I want to check the sentences a little more closely.
We talked a little bit about the Segway that Yoko had mentioned in her comment to the blog. I haven't seen one yet, so I really need to go out to Sennen no Mori and take a look.
Update:
Tomoe I found your postcard. It got mixed in with some other documents.
The homework for next week is to do the Vocabulary Notebook on page 42.
Yukari (nickname Sunny or Sonny) joined us an observer. I think she had a good time. A few people at least looked at the photos on my blog during the break. Maki thinks I should bring some samples of my bread. I will try to remember to do that next week. Maki said that they are having a festival next Sunday at the Otufuke Road Station. It starts at 8 and goes until 6:30. If you have time, stop by and say hello. I am sure she will be so busy that she won't be able to talk for long.
Well, Tonight the homework went smoothly and Kieko did hers without even realizing. In just talking at the beginning of the class she went through some of her gripes about her boyfriend, her co-worker and then just had to come up with one more.
Instead of using the textbook tonight I gave you the option of trying to keep the conversation going for 45 minutes. I was just the corrector and kept a Japanese speaking tally. You did pretty well keeping the conversation going, but relied a little too much on using questions. In the rest of the units we will cover more conversation strategies.
It was so nice to have Fumiko back. I am sure she felt a little rusty, but she we will be back up to speed in no time. There weren't too many things to talk about, but Yoko said she did use a little bit of English when she was helping out at the international tennis tournament.
We talked about things that people used to do with their kids when they were younger and we also talked about demands that parents make of their children. Most people thought the ones in the book were unreasonable. The homework for summer vacation is to think of the three most common demands Japanese parents make of their adult children. You need to also look at the 8 sentences in #2 and write true sentences about yourself. Keep the first part of the sentence the same, but you can change the second half.
The final bit of summer vacation homework is to check on the blog occasionally and if I have a new post please leave a comment.
Well, I think we may have cured this class of SSS, but we will need to see what happens next week. Yuki moved over the weekend, so she is very tired and couldn't make it to class this week. Kieko tried to post a comment last week, but for some reason it didn't go through.
We moved on to the new unit and started talking about family and things we do or used to do with our families. We looked at the gripes that people might have about their parents, children or spouses. The homework for next is to write about three gripes that you have. You can use the ones in the book as an example.
Yoko was back today. She said she made it to the quarter finals in the tennis tournament that she was in. Congratulations and hopefully, next time she can make it to the finals.
After talking about the news and the weekend we went over the homework. Just like the Monday class it took the whole class to cover everything. There were a lot of interesting bits of information that came out in the talks. At the very end of the class there was a question about the worst movie you have ever seen. No one had one so I mentioned a movie with Sylvester Stallione. I think it was called Oscar . You might check and see if you can find it at the video rental store.
Well, Yuki and Kieko were both gone this evening. I guess they are both getting busy because they are planning their weddings.
We had another new student join us tonight and his name is also Shunsuke. This could get really confusing.
We went over the homework and it took the whole class. I hadn't planned to spend the whole class doing the review, but I think it was time well spent. Next week we will start Unit 4 and there is no homework.
Another small class today. Yoko was gone again, but I am not sure why. Kazue said she had some business to attend to.
We started off with a listening exercise today and then checked the homework. After that we did the reading exercise and practiced scanning. Tomoe was very good at remembering the numbers. The homework for next week is to do the review exercises on pages 31 and 32.
Yoko and Mika thought they might be the only students, but Tomoe and Kazue showed up shortly after 10:45. There were a lot of good questions and, just like in the Monday night Step 3 class, I learned a few more things about Tokachi.
We worked with how to be a supportive listener and to use superlatives for emphasis. There was a little bit of trouble with the lack of stress on some of the words when we were practicing. We didn't get to the listening exercise like I had hoped, so we will start the class with it next week. For homework answer the 5 questions in the listening exercise and don't read the article in Lesson D.
It was Yuki's turn to be absent tonight. Kieko said she was trying to get a new apartment. Kieko mentioned that she will be getting married in the fall and is also planning to move to a new place. They will both be very busy in the coming months.
We did the exercise with superlatives and answered the questions about trips and vacations in the book. There were some very interesting answers. After that we did the reading exercise, but we focused on skimming and scanning. Getting the numbers is always difficult.
The homework for next class (July 23) is the review exercises on pages 31 and 32. Enjoy the three-day weekend.
A small class today because Fumiko and Yoko were absent. We went over the homework and there were some good examples of the superlatives. I will look them over and give the papers back to you next week.
We continued on with working with superlatives and looked at vocabulary for geographic features. We also did some work with skimming and scanning. The homework for next week is to write 5 sets of questions like those in exercise 2A, but about Tokachi.
We had some extra time at the end of class today because we didn't spend much time at the beginning talking about the news or people's weekends. Mika wanted some recommendations for restaurants where she could go for her wedding anniversary next month. We gave several suggestions and then Tomoe wanted to know if they were children friendly. Most of the ones we suggested weren't, but we gave her some ideas of others. She said when she went to Karuizawa with her family many of the restaurants didn't allow children. This lead to a short discussion about parents who don't control their children in public.
Kieko and Maki were both back tonight, but Yumi was gone. Hopefully, next week we will have all 5 students here. Yuki and Shunsuke did the homework, so we were able to learn some things about Tokachi. My guesses to their questions were way off. After that we continued working with superlatives and how to use them to strengthen our opinions about things. We also practiced stressing and stretching them out.
The homework for next week is to answer the five questions from the listening exercise about your trips and vacations. I will have to think about my answers, too.
I enjoyed listening to your homework and I will read them over and make a few changes. There were a couple places where using "amazingly" was an adjective and not an adverb like we wanted.
We worked with superlatives and asked questions about Japan and Obihiro. The homework for next week is to write a tourist pamphlet description of Obihiro/Tokachi and try to use as many superlatives as possible.
Two new students tonight, but two regulars were gone. I hope Kieko's headache has gone away. I am not sure about what happened to Maki, but I am sure she will post a comment to let us know.
We continued working with superlatives and looked at other adjectives used for geographic features. The homework for next week is to think of 5 questions about Tokachi related to geography. Also take a look at the vocabulary building exercises on page 30.
I had a real surprise today because Yoko volunteered to be my partner for the warm up exercise. She usually volunteers someone else. I wasn't her partner this time but maybe next week.
We did the reading exercise and I think people saw how useful skimming can be. It takes some practice to get really good at it, so we will probably practice it again later in the book. People seemed really interested in the Galapagos and Yoko was the only person who wanted to read more about Athens, Greece. There are a lot places to find travel blogs, but this one looks good.
The homework for next week is to write your own blog entry about a trip you have taken. Try to use the words in exercise #3 on page 19.
I asked Carlos and he said that in Australia they also use day off and not holiday for a regular time off from work.
Seji joined us for a make up class again tonight. I think this is the third or fourth time for him. We also had Yumi observing and I think she may be sign up for this class next week. As I mentioned in class we will be getting one more new student next week. That will bring us up to 5 people.
I liked the writings you did for the homework and you were able to use the vocabulary we studied last week. Tonight we started talking about superlatives and you had to take a quiz. You didn't do too bad. If you want to practice some more you can go here.
The homework for next week is to write a description of Obihiro and try to use as many superlatives as you can. This link might help you out.
Tomoe and Fumiko talked about the Kagawa Prefecture party that they attended on the weekend. It sounds like they had a really good time. Mika, Kazue and Yoko talked about a variety of things. Mika mentioned that she had eaten in a Mexican restaurant in Sapporo and was wondering where she could buy ingredients for Mexican dishes. This is a good online store.
We did some listening exercises and then did the activity to find out things people hadn't done. It was kind of interesting to hear the things that people have and haven't done.
Kunio (3C) joined us for a make up class tonight. I think it was the first time for him to attend my class. He showed us an article about a climbing adventure he had thirty years ago.
We read the the different travel blogs and if you want to read more go here. We also learned that Maki was the only person with a blog besides me. I think I posted a link to her website once before, but I have never put up her blog address. Maybe she will put it in the comments.
We had some extra time at the end of class and we ended up talking about movies. Kunio said one of his favorite actors was Audrey Hepburn. There was a question about how many movies she had made and you can find that answer here.
I thought I had posted something after class, but it seems to have disappeared. I will try one more time and see what happens.
At the beginning of class today I discovered that Keiko (Step 3M) and I have something in common. We both want to build a tree house someday. She said she has a book about building one and I have two books. I have also found several interesting sites on the internet. This one was the most useful.
We did a little more with conversation strategies and will practice them a little bit more next week.
Two people here for make up classes tonight. The larger class made several of the exercises more interesting; especially the last one. It one was funny how many of you said you had never drunk tequila or vodka, but when I mentioned the cocktails that use those two liquors everyone changed their answers.
The homework for next week is really difficult. Do not do the reading in the next lesson.
Mika brought her computer today so that she could show photographs from her trip. She also brought a print of her holding a large iguana.
We went over the homework and people did a really good job. There were several points where your conversations were very natural. I think we are making good progress on improving your conversations skills.
We looked at using present perfect and simple past tense patterns today. We will continue with this in the next two lessons. The homework for next week is to do the vocabulary notebook section and 3B on page 15.
Maki was a little bit under the weather this evening, so she wasn't her usual energetic self. I hope she is feeling better soon. Kieko was back from her trip (thanks for the chocolate) and she said she used English everyday. The photos she brought were really nice and the resort looked absolutely fabulous. I would like to go there in the near future.
We continued using the present perfect tense. We also looked at few conversation strategies and there will be more to practice next week. The homework for next week is to use the CD-Rom that came with your book.
Update: Kieko your postcard arrived this afternoon. The postcard of the resort is nice and I looked at the website. It made me want to visit there even more.
I am sitting here enjoying a cup of coffee made from the beans that Mika brought back from Bali and the orange (?) that Tome got from her cousin. It is an interesting match.
We went over the homework and I read the three profiles. Everyone did a good job at guessing. I was watching Yoko when I read the line about really liking tea. She looked over at Fumiko, so I knew she had guessed correctly.
We started working with the present perfect tense today. People didn't have too much trouble with it but we will practice it a little bit more next week.
Well, Yuki and Maki did well tonight seeing how it was just the two of them. There were some interesting points that came up in going over the homework and doing the new lesson. The "have you ever...." pattern can really generate some interesting conversations. Maki was sure what a Segway was, which surprised me a little. It is in Japanese, but you can read about the machine here.
The homework for next week is to do the vocabulary exercises on page 20.
Yoko was sick today so she couldn't come to this class again, but at least she did a make up class Monday a week ago. It nice she hasn't missed class two weeks in a row. I was going to ask about her tennis tournament last weekend. My wife saw her name in the paper, but I forgot to find out if she won or not. Yoko did you win?
At the beginning of the class when we were talking about the weekend the problem of littering came up. I told I would link to this famous anti-littering commercial. Take a look and tell me what you think. This link will tell you more about the actor. I didn't know any of this until I found this page. Also in our talk the "broken window theory" came up. The link will give you the pros and cons of the theory, but the English is kind of difficult.
There were some really good sentences for the homework, but there were a few that needed a little tweaking so that we could use "at least" correctly. We read about the four famous people and if you look on the net you will be able to find even more information about them. The homework for next week is to write five sentences about yourself using information that you think your classmates won't know. I would like this to be a secret, so don't show your classmates before class.
Back to our regular members tonight. After several weeks of having a people doing make up classes it was just the four of us again. We went over the homework and then started Unit 2. Tonight's lesson was about present perfect. To practice more go here.
The homework is to do #3 on page 13. Also I am looking forward to people posting comments this week.
A small class today, but least everyone had done their homework and used most of the new words. Yoko did a make up class on Monday, so maybe Mika and Mitsuo will come to a another class next week.
We talked about Golden Week and then went over the homework. Today's lesson was about habits and how to talk about them. We also looked at how to use "at least". For homework next week think of one your bad habits and try to find a good point about it. In your sentences try to use "at least".
A pleasant surprise and a shock. It was nice to have three people here for make up classes, I was flabbergasted that no one had done the homework. Oh well, I am sure everyone will be ready next week.
We read about the four famous people and some surprising information about each one. We also talked about the person that everyone would like to meet and why. After that we looked at some of the adjectives used in the reading. All of them are commonly used when writing about famous people.
Mitsuo was absent today, but no one remembered if he said he was going somewhere. We went over the homework and talked about how to remember new words. In the homework people had to use different adjectives, but there were a couple of times they weren't used correctly. The nuance of the word didn't match the rest of the sentence.
After class today Kazue showed people how to install the CD-ROM from the book, how to use podcasts and how to use Skype. It was really useful for everyone. Thank you Kazue.
At the beginning of class we talked about Lake Toya being selected as the site for the G8 summit next year. Tome, not being from Hokkaido originally, didn't know much about the area. Kazue explained a little bit about the area and Showa Shinzan
The homework for Golden Week is to pick three people and write 5 things about the their personalities. Try to use the words you have learned in this unit.
Kenichi was an observer tonight and he decided to join the Thursday 3G class. Hopefully, he will come back for a make up class sometime. Maki thank you for pointing out the spelling mistake in the weekend post, but don't be afraid to point out those things to me. The easiest way to do it is by posting a comment. This goes for any class, not just this one.
We talked about habits today and looked at ones that upset people. I am looking forward to hearing your homework after Golden Week. I am sure you will have some interesting sentences about the habits of your friends and family.
Kazue was gone and Yoshie was her for a make up class. People must have practiced the questions a lot at home because you did a very good job in asking them. You were much smoother than last week.
We started the next lesson and there were a lot of new words there. We talked about preparing for class and looking up the new words before the lesson. I still would like you to try not to check the words before class. Try to understand as much as you can and then if you still don't clearly understand them check after the lesson. I know you will find it harder, but I think you will be able to remember the words better.
The homework for next week is to do #2 (page 5 and #4 (page 10).
We talked a little about Skype at the beginning of class and if you would like to learn more go here.
We had a lot of laughs tonight and it was fun having Kazue with us from the Wed. 3K class. People were joking around using the adverbs to modify the adjectives, but in doing it I think you go a feel for how they are used and how they make your English more interesting. The homework is to do the On your own part on page 10. Also take a look at the CD-Rom that came with the book. We will talk about how to use it at home to study.
Yoko was here today so we had all the members of the class. Yoko met Mika at a JOY party and had lunch with Tomoe a few weeks ago. It was the first time for her to talk with Mitsuo.
I mentioned that Kazue had won a prize for perfect attendance, but Kazue was honest and said that she had missed some classes. It turns out I had made a mistake.
At the end of class we had some time, so we asked Yoko about her trip to Kyoto. By chance I was able to use the question form we had practiced in the lesson. People had some trouble with the pattern, so the homework is to practice saying the sentences in the book and write three more of your own.
It was nice to have Yoko with us tonight. We were able to hear about her trip toe Paris and Rome. It sounds like it was a wonderful trip, but busy.
We continued talking about adverbs and adjectives. Today we focused on using adverbs before adjectives and adverbs as a way of making them stronger. The homework for next week is to read the explanation in #2 and then think of people with the nine different qualities. We will share the information with each other next week.
Maki stopped by Bucky Hall after class and chatted with a former classmate. Maybe Yuki and Kieko will stop by Bucky Hall next week.
We welcomed Mitsuo to the class and our other new student, Yoko, will be here next week. Neither of the students are new to JOY. Mitsuo was my student over 20 years ago and Yoko is moving up from Step 2. We may get some new students later, but right now we will start with six.
I went over some to class management type stuff and then we talked about what been people have been doing since the last class. After that we started the textbook. We looked at adjectives and adverbs of manner. The homework for next week is to do 2A on page 3.
It looks like we will start out with a small class again this time. It was the same last year, but after a few months we were up to 6 or 7 students. I think we will have fun and the new textbook has a lot of interesting topics to discuss.
I had a late April Fool's joke with the no homework pledge, but I knew you would be disappointed if I didn't give you homework every week. The homework for next week is 2A on page 3.
Sorry it has taken me so long to get this last post done. It has been a very busy week. I will see most of you on Monday, but those I don't I a sure we will bump into each other at JOY or somewhere in the future.
Two visitors this evening and one of them was named Yoko! It would have been a really confusing evening if the other two Yokos had been here. It sounded like almost everyone had looked over the questions and were prepared to answer them. We worked on a few conversation techniques and people did a pretty good job putting them into practice.
The first listening exercise was easy, but people found the second one more challenging. I mentioned that you can find movies reviews on the net and one of them is here and another here.
The homework for next is to write a movie review and do the reading about the author of the Harry Potter books.
Kazue was absent today because she had to attend a memorial service for her aunt who died last year. Ritsuko was back today, but after being gone for several weeks she was hoping for an easy class. I think she got her wish. We mainly talked about movies and tried to make the conversations as natural as possible. It took a little while, but after 5 minutes and a little coaching you really did a great job. I think this activity made a good final test.
Everyone except Ritsuko is coming back to this class and we have a couple of new people joining. I think it is going to be a really fun class next time and I think you will like the new textbook. See you at some of the events!
Hitoshi joined us from Joe's class on Wednesday. He has a few more make ups to do before the end of the term, so he may be back next week.
We practiced the emphasis on the adjectives and put them into different groups. Remember be careful with some of the ones we looked at because they have strong meanings. If you use them incorrectly you could make someone very angry.
The homework for next week is to look over the questions in #7 on page 88. We will talk about them next week.
Fumiko said she was very nervous in her piano recital and she can't remember how well she played. I am sure she did just fine. Kazue is still waiting for her new computer. Mika mentioned one of her husband's co-workers fell off a roof when he was shoveling snow. He broke his back, but the surgery to repair it was a success.
We looked at using participles as adjectives and focused on the pronunciation, too. The topics we used were movies and books. Everyone wanted to have longer conversations, but that is what we will be doing next week. The homework for next week is to look at the questions in #7 and think about how you would answer them. Also do #9 A & B on page 89.
Yoko and Sadaki both let me know they were going to be absent and Makoto said he had a business trip to Tokyo. I didn't hear anything from the other Yoko or Maki, but this is a busy season for most people.
We went over the homework which took most of the class, but we learned some interesting things about each other. If we had wanted we could have talked about any one of the topics for 10 minutes or more.
The homework for next week is to do #3 and #4 on page 87.
At the beginning of class we talked a lot about computers and software, so I hope Fumiko and Mika didn't get bored. If you want to read more about the browser software that we were talking about you can go here.
Going over the homework took much longer than I thought, but many interesting things came out. If I had given you the time, you could have talked about some of the topics for 10 minutes or so.
Next week will do more with Unit 13.
It was interesting today. The three people who had been absent for the last two weeks were back, but the everyone else was gone. We went over some of the material we covered last week because it was new for everyone. We went over the reading and Makato was skeptical about Michael who could speak at 4 months of age. If you want to read more about child prodigies, go here.
The homework for next week is to finish the 14 sentences in Interchange 12. We will use them at the beginning of class next week. We will then start Unit 13.
We went over the homework and practiced using the present perfect continuous pattern. You can go here if you would like to do a quiz.
Mika sent a postcard from here weekend trip to a hot spring. It sounds like she had a very relaxing time. Maybe I will be lucky and have a chance to go to a hot spring during the break between classes.
The homework for next week is to complete the sentences in Interchange 12 and we will do the board game again next week. Also next week we will start Unit 13.
I think this is the first time that Kieko and Yuki have missed two classes in row. I wonder what happened. Hopefully, they will be here next week.
We went over people's stories, but Yoko was the only person who wrote it out. Last class we looked at the past continuous and today we used the present perfect continuous. If you look at the left-hand side you will see links to other grammar patterns click on them to see what is there. You can do a short quiz here.
The homework for next is not to read the article on page 83. We will do something with it in class, so you don't need to worry about preparing anything.
It sounds like Kazue had a wonderful time on her trip. She said the weather was nice and it was warm everyday. She also ate a lot of delicious seafood.
We went over the homework and people did a very good job using the adverbs in their stories. We also started the new conversation. It was pretty natural and there were some good phrases to remember. We will practice it more next week.
We listened to the news story about how much Americans spend on Valentine's Day and if you want to listen to more of those kinds of stories go here.
The homework for next week is to do the grammar focus on page 81, and don't do the reading on page 83. We will do that one in class.
Both Kazue and Tomoe were gone today. Kazue's postcard arrived yesterday. She must have sent it the day she arrived.
With only three people today we talked about the news and the things people did last week. We started the with the grammar focus and looked at the past continuous and you can do a practice exercise here. For homework next write the endings for the five sentences in part B. If you want learn more about about the people from the listening exercise go here and here.
The other part of the homework is to do #6 on page 90. Try to use as many of the words from #5 as you can in the story.
Both Yuki and Kieko were gone tonight, but I am sure they will do a make up class this week. Minori joined us from Joe's 3C class. I hope she will visit us again sometime. We worked with the past continuous today and for homework do part B again. You can do an online drill here.
We did a listening exercise and learned about Yang Zhiga and Gwyneth Paltrow. It was difficult, but people were able to get the important information.
After that we looked at the adverbs and talked about if they were positive, negative or neutral. Try to us as many as you can in the second part of your homework. Make your story as interesting as you can.
I am glad everyone decided to come even though it was snowing pretty hard this morning. I am glad it has finally stopped and hopefully things won't get too icy.
People did a good job with the descriptions of Tokachi and I am looking forward to getting copies by e-mail. We also looked at the unique museums and talked about some of the ones in Tokachi. Fumiko has been to the Bean Museum and the Sugar Beet Museum. Most people hadn't heard of the Bean Museum. I haven't been there, but will have to go someday.
We talked about being luck and unlucky. In this class everyone thought they were lucky. In Monday's class most people thought they were normal, but a couple thought they were unlucky. The thought this mainly because they always have trouble when they go traveling.
This class doesn't get a lot of people doing make up classes, so it was nice to have Ichiko from Joe's 3C class join us. We went over the guidebook introductions that people wrote for Tokachi and people did a good job. After that we went over the readings about the unique museums and I asked if anyone had been to the Sugar Beet Museum in Obihiro and no one had. I was surprised. It is interesting so you should go take a look if you have a chance.
We started the new unit and talked about successful people. We also talked about having good luck and bad luck. Everyone felt they were lucky tonight because I didn't give any homework.
Again sorry about last week. If I haven't posted something by the end of the day on Thursday please send me an e-mail.
We started out by listening to guides talk about the three famous landmarks and then we went over the homework. You had some pretty good questions, but people kept forgetting to answer with the passive form. We did another listening about Columbia. The homework for next week is to write a guidebook introduction for Tokachi and do the reading exercise.
Maki and Yoko practiced the violin a little before class. I forgot to ask Maki where she is getting her information. Maki did you find a site online or did you buy a book to teach yourself the violin?
We continued practicing the passive pattern and to do that we looked at some typical guide book information. For the homework next week you need to write a guidebook introduction for Tokachi. Look at the example in #12. Also do the reading on page 77.
Oops! I remembered today that I didn't put a link to something about the Empire State Building like I had promised, but I now discovered I hadn't published anything at all. Sorry about that.
The homework for next week is to #7A & and werite the questions for Interchange 11.
A full house tonight. People had a chance to catch up on what they have been doing. Yoko talked a little bit about her trip to Viet Nam and the trouble she had because of the snow storm in Hokkaido.
We started the new unit and looked at using the passive voice. At the end of class we did a trivia type of quiz. I was surprised people had so much trouble coming up with ideas. I mentioned we will be having a trivia quiz night at the end of the term. Keep an eye on the JOY News for more information.
The homework for next week is to do #5 and #7 on page 74.
This class was the first one this week where everyone showed up. We talked about New Year's resolutions at the beginning of class and what people did over the holidays. It sounds like everyone had a quite time. We went over the homework and did the listening exercise. My timing was a bit off, so we didn't have enough time to finish the last activity.
Ritsuko is leaving for Singapore. She is going to be gone 4 nights and 5 days. This time I gave postcard homework to her daughter and granddaughters. There is no homework for the rest of you next week, but I was pleased to see that all of you checked out books from the graded reader library.
I enjoyed the tea after class. Thank you for bringing the snacks.
Only Keiko and Yuki tonight! I wonder if everyone else forgot or just didn't want to drive on the icy roads. We did one listening exercise from the review unit and then talked about a lot of different topics. There is no homework for next week and we will start Unit 11.
Mika was sick today, so I hope she is feeling better by Friday because I think she is planning to come to the party. We went over the homework and found out what people thought they would be good at. We also did the reading and talked about the type of personality we thought we were. Ritsuko had no idea, so maybe she should take this test.
The homework for winter vacation is to do the self-assessment, 1A and 4A on pages 70 and 71. We can also talk about the books your checked out from the graded reader library.
This class doesn't seem very interested in talking about the news during the warm up so most people talk about what is happening in their lives. Maki mentioned she bought a violin in an online auction and it cost her less than 7,000 yen, including shipping. It sounded like Yoko is also interested in learning to play. After they take lessons for awhile maybe they can perform a duet for the class.
We went over the homework and did the reading exercise. After that we did the Christmas quiz and people didn't do as well as I thought they would. If you want to study for next year go here.
The winter vacation homework is to do the self-assessment. 1A and 4A in the progress check section on pages 70-71. Remember will be having class on January 8 even though it is a national holiday.
Only Kazue was absent today. She usually has perfect attendance, so she will probably do a make up class.
We went over the homework and practiced the short responses. We did it a little differently than the Monday class, but people still weren't fast enough. Keep practicing. We went over the personality traits and there was mix up with the word generous and jealous. The same thing happened in the Monday night class.
The homework for next week is to do #10B, but make sure the sentences you make are true for you. Also don't read #12 on page 69.
Update: The mandarin oranges that Tome brought are very delicious. It appears this type of orange has many different names.
This class has continued to grow and we are up to 8 people now. Sadaki was back and had some gifts from Switzerland.
We went over the short responses and practiced several times. You still need to respond a little faster. We also looked at the different personality traits and talked about if they were positive or negative. There was disagreement about the word strict, but looking at the definition in the dictionary there are more negative connotations than positive ones. We also looked at using clauses with because. The homework for next week is to do #10B. Make sure that the sentences are true for you.
It was nice to Ritusko back today and this was the first time since Oct. 25 that we had full attendance. Kazue said she had dinner at the new Italian restaurant near the downtown Nagasakiya. She had frog legs, which were okay, but the rest of the meal was very good.
We practiced the quick responses, but there was still a little bit of lag time before you could answer. We will keep working on this for the next few weeks. The homework for next week is to use the answers you got from your partner to write sentences about things they like to do, don't mind doing and hate doing. We will use them at the beginning of class next week.
Yuki and Kieko are doing tag team lessons. One week Yuki is absent and Kieko comes and then Kieko is absent and Yuki comes. Maybe next week they both will be here. Makoto and Yoko were also absent tonight, but irregular attendance isn't unusual this time of year because of parties and colds.
We went over the homework and practiced the quick responses. We also did the listening exercise and talked about the chores people like and don't like. I thought people would dislike more of the household chores, but most people didn't mind doing them.
Ritsuko was gone again today and she will probably be absent next week, too. We talked about the reading and people came up with some interesting ways to tell if someone is in love. After going over the homework we moved on to Unit 10 and talked about qualifications for jobs. This class and the one on Monday picked the same ones as the most important. In the conversation they talked about a job on a cruise ship. If you are interested in finding out more go here.
The homework for next week is to do 3A on page 65. Make sure to practice saying them and think about how you would respond.
The colds are going around. Kieko was sick tonight and I was sick over the weekend. I was feeling a little bit better today, but my voice is still a little strange. Makoto asked if there were any American home remedies for a cold and all I could think of was chicken soup. He mentioned that when he lived in Canada people would drink boiled "Coca Cola". I couldn't find anything on the net about it, so see what you can find.
There were a lot of interesting comments about the reading. Maki wanted to know why the word "crush" was used to talk about someone you liked, but I am not really sure.
We started Unit 10 and talked about job skills. In the conversation they mention finding jobs online. One good place to go is Monster.com and another is Craig's List
The homework for next week is to practice the sentences in 3A and to think about how you would respond to them. We want to work on quick responses next week.
Ritsuko and Kazue were absent today, so we had small class. Fumiko showed us some pictures from her daughter's wedding and the garden party she attended in Tokyo. Mika is having more heater troubles. Last time it was the chimney and this time it is the starter. She is wondering what to do. Tomoe attended her daughter's last kindergarten show. Next year she will be going into elementary school.
We continued practicing the conditional sentences with if clauses. There were some very good ideas for consequences. We didn't have enough time to do #13 on page 63 so that is the homework for next week.
Makoto has now been able to meet everyone in class. At the beginning of class today Maki and Yuki introduced themselves. Maki was his partner for most of the class. Next week maybe Yuki or one of the Yokos will have the chance. Oops! I am wrong he hasn't met everyone yet. He still hasn't met Sadaki.
We continued working with the conditional sentences and I am sure we will come back to this pattern before we finish this book. The homework for next week is to do the reading on page 63. (Kieko this week I didn't forget!)
Fumiko was busy today so she couldn't make it to class. She will try to be here next week. I hope she can be here because Kazue said she will be absent next week. We talked a little bit about the weekend and it sounds like Kazue had a fun BBQ because it went on for 8 hours. Mika made a birthday cake for her husband and said it was very delicious. Maybe she will bring a sample to class sometime!
I thought people might write about a friend for the homework, but everyone wrote about someone in their family. There was some interesting information about your families in the sentences you wrote.
Today the grammar focus was conditional sentences with if clauses and go to this site, if you would like to do a little more practice.
Welcome to Makoto our new student. He had a chance to introduce himself to everyone, but he used a few terms about his job that people had a hard time understanding. The people who were absent this week will have a chance to talk to him next week.
We did exercise #8 about having a high-paying job. There was an interesting list of advantages and disadvantages. The one about donating money to charity caused a short discussion. This site will give you some tips on donating to charities. This link is to information about the tradition of giving in America.
The grammar point this week was conditional sentences with if clauses and it is one that is used in daily conversation. You can do some more practice here.
Fumiko is in Tokyo this week and we can get the details of her trip next week. Maybe she can bring some pictures. We got the details of Mika's problem that she posted a comment about last week. I misunderstood. It wasn't her stove that was the problem, but the chimney. It sounds like a section of the chimney liner collapsed and blocked the area where the metal stove pipe goes into the chimney. She was lucky it happened now and not when it was really cold and didn't happen at night while they were sleeping.
We did a lot more work with the time contrasts and by the end people were using them fairly well. There were some interesting ideas when we talked about what people would be doing in 5 and 10 years from now.
The homework for next week is do #7, but write about a friend or relative.
We continued with our work with time contrasts and people came up with some really good ideas for exercises 3 and 4. There were also some good points made in #6. I hope you took good notes about your partner because you need them to do the homework for next week. Yoko wasn't here so she will have to try to write about a friend. Follow the example in 7B.
Next week Yuki will be gone because she is going on vacation and Sadaki will be in Switzerland.
Mika was absent today and in class I didn't remember, but I think she said she was going to Tokyo for a concert this week. Fumiko brought some souvenirs that her husband brought back from Madison, Wisconsin, Obihiro's new sister city. Be careful this isn't the same Madison as in the Bridges of Madison County. Tomoe brought some snacks from Kagawa Prefecture.
We went over the homework and talked about holidays in Japan. We started the Unit 9 and did the conversation. The homework for next week is 3 A & B.
Two visitors tonight. Takuya was from Joe's class (last week he went to the game in Sapporo) and Yuki from Carlo's class. We went over the homework and talked about unique customs. There don't seem to be any special customs for the Culture Day that is coming this Friday. Does anyone know of any special Culture Day foods?
We started Unit 9 and we will be working on time contrasts. The homework for next week is to write the endings for the 8 sentences in column A with information about yourself. We will compare them with your classmates next week.
Riksuko was back from her trip to Perth and it sounds like she spoke a lot of English on this trip. I wonder if Yoshie was able to make it to Perth this fall like she had planned?
People had some good ideas for Japanese wedding customs. Mika had one that no one else mentioned and that was sometimes couples live together before they get married. A few of the items people mentioned were out of fashion and not done much anymore. It sounds like the engagement ceremony is pretty much dead.
The name of one of the activities we did today was called once in a blue moon. The term was new to people, so to learn more go here. The activity required you to ask a lot of questions. Fumiko was the only person who answered yes to the question about wearing a kimono at least once a year. No one in the Monday class answered yes. Why don't people want to wear a kimono anymore?
The homework for next week is to #12 on page 54. You only need to come with one or two ideas and then do #13 on page 55. We will start Unit 9 next week.
Only Maki was absent tonight. Sadaki says he has been really busy and will continue to be busy because he is working on his presentation for a conference in Switzerland next month.
We went over the homework and people came up with some good ideas for the Japanese wedding customs. We also interviewed each other about how we celebrate different occasions. I was the only person who had given someone a surprise party. As Yoko pointed out that isn't really a Japanese custom. Other people mentioned sending birthday cards wasn't common either. Online greeting cards are popular in the US now and there are many sites available.
The homework for next week is to do #13 A and B on page 55. Also see if you can find out if high school festival parades are only a Hokkaido tradition or do they have them in other places in Japan. In passing at the end of class, I mentioned that we would be having class on devil's night, but no one knew what it was. You can read about it here.
In talking about what people did last weekend Fumiko mentioned that she had a scare when driving to Lake Akan. When she looked in her rear view mirror she saw a patrol car with its lights flashing. She pulled over, but the car passed and just announced that she should drive safely and and not speed.
We went over the homework and for some reason everyone picked winter festivals to write about. There a lot of winter festivals in Tokachi, but when you have long winters like we do you need something to break them up a little.
We talked about Japanese weddings and people agreed that sugar is a symbol of happiness in Japan. People thought that common return gifts for weddings now were cups or towels. The homework for next week is to do 10B. Try to think of answers for Japan.
Sadaki couldn't make it today, but everyone else was here. People shared information on different Tokachi festivals. There isn't a good site with that type of information about Tokachi.
We talked about wedding customs in Japan and North America. I mentioned the wedding registry and other wedding customs. The homework for next week is 10B.
We went over the homework and I think Kazue's comment was very true. We are almost there and many of the things the article mentioned are already possible. After going over the homework we started the new unit which is about holidays and festivals. There was a split between New Years and Obon as a favorite holiday. I would have to say that New Year's Day is my favorite Japanese holiday, but I liked it better when most shops were closed for three days. Now so many shops even open on January 1.
We also did the listening about Carnaval. People were able to get most of the information on the first two listenings, but we will listen one more time next week.
The homework for next week is 4B on page 51, but make sure to write sentences that are true for you. The second part of the homework is to write about a festival in Tokachi. Make it like an entry in a travel guide. Of course, Ritsuko has special homework and that is to send a postcard from Perth
As you read in the comments from last class Yuko had to change days because of her job, so we have only 5 people this term. Fumiko couldn't make it today and that left us with only four. Hopefully, we will get some new students.
We went over the homework and did some listening exercises. People found them challenging and we listened to them several times. Remember it is important to connect what you hear with what you know about a subject and then make a guess.
The homework for next week is to do #12 on page 49.
We now have two Yokos so things could get a little complicated. We talked about holidays and festivals. It seems that New Years is the most popular holiday, but people don't seem to attend Tokachi Festivals. At the end of class I mentioned county fairs. This link will take you to the Franklin County Fair that my Grandfather was involved in for many years. It is not a very big affair, but it is a lot of fun.
The homework for next class is to write a guidebook style entry about a Tokachi festival. Give as much information as you can.
It is too bad that Yoshie couldn't be here for our last class, but I hope that she will continue to read the blog and post comments.
Today's topic must have been easier for Kazue because she is an experienced computer user. I wonder if she considers herself a "computer whiz"? We did the listening about netevaders and internet dropouts. They are kind of difficult, but take a look at them.
There isn't class next week, but we are having some special events, so I hope that you can come. The homework for the next class is #8 A & B on page 47.
Tomoe decided to join this class, so we will have at least one new person. Yoshie usually takes a break in the winter because it is hard to get here by train and bus in the winter.
We went over the homework and talked about bad neighbors. Mika was the only person who has had trouble with a neighbor and they were able to solve the problem fairly easily. We have a neighbor with a really old dog that barks a lot now, but it is mainly because it is getting senile.
The new unit is about tech and electronics. We talked about computers and Ritsuko is the only person who doesn't use one. Maybe she will learn how after doing this unit. The homework for next week #3 on page 45 and check the syllable stress for the words in 4B.
We went over using imperatives and infinitives for giving suggestions. Remember that I said you should use these more with friends and family, but with people you don't know very well it would be better to use a more polite form. The listening exercise gave you a lot of trouble, but part of the problem was that you didn't have any experience with camcorders (video cameras) or in-line skates. Having knowledge about a topic in Japanese makes understanding about it in English that much easier. The advice you gave to the listeners in the radio call in show was interesting if not always very practical.
The homework for next class is #12 on page 49. Enjoy the three-day weekend next week.
We had an observer today which gave us an even number. This is the second week that Yoshie has been absent, so maybe she went on her vacation. I wonder if she went to Australia? I am sure Ikumi is very tired from her wedding last week. I think she said they weren't going on their honeymoon for awhile.
We practiced complaining again today, but we also looked at how to apologize. There are some cultural differences when it comes to apologizing. This link will take you to Japanese language site teaching students how to apologize. Take a look and see if you agree with it and how it may be different from what we learned in class today.
The homework for next week is to do the reading again (no dictionary) and do parts a and b. Also look at 11 on page 40 and write guidelines for this class.
A new student joined us tonight. He is a post-doctorate fellow at Chikudai. That was a new idea for everyone. We did the listening exercise about net evaders and internet dropouts . It was difficult and we had to listen to it several times.
We also listened to the conversation about cell phones and talked about the difference in plans between America and Japan. Maki and I are both au users, so here is a link to their plan and this link will take you to an American company.
The homework for next week is #8 on page 47.
Fumiko was back today and she had some bad news. While she was away on vacation someone burglarized her house. They stole some money and a electronic dictionary. She was really shocked.
We went over the homework and did the listening exercise. We also talked about making requests. Next week we will practice this some more. For homework please look at the grammar focus on page 39. Also don't do the reading on page 41 because we will do it in class.
Keiko, Yoko and I had a very good talk about several topics at the beginning of the class. We hoped that some more people would come, but it turned out to be only the two of them. We went over the homework and spent a lot of time with #5 on page 46. We talked about how much we used computers and what we used them for. Yoko said that she no longer has an internet connection at her home, but she does use the computer a lot at work for making documents. Keiko has a computer at home, but she doesn't use it that much. I would say I probably use the computer too much and it probably isn't very good for my eyes.
Next week there is no homework and we will start with listening exercise on page 46. If you were absent last week, please post a comment telling use your answers to the questions in 5B.
We heard a little bit about Risuko's trip to China and Mika's trip to Kanazawa. I also talked about my trip to Alaska. It looked like Ristuko might be thinking about making a visit. If she wants help planning her trip I would be glad to offer a hand, but she could also go here.
Ikumi brought along here wedding photos. These were the studio photos and the wedding is going be on Sept. 2. She said there are still a lot of things to do.
The homework for next week is 5A on page 38. If you want to learn more go here.
I was hoping that Masayo could be here tonight because I wanted to hear about her canceled trip to Italy. Maybe we can hear about it next week.
Uro joined us from Joe's Wednesday Step 3 class. I think it was his first time to join this class. I hope he will be able to join us again in the future.
We talked about people's summer vacations and it seems that Yukiko had the busiest one. She was in Osaka and Tokyo. A few other people went to Sapporo or saw the fireworks. Poor Maki didn't have a special holiday.
The homework was a reading about how to deal with troublesome neighbors. Just about everyone had experienced bad neighbors. I forgot to ask if anyone had ever been a bad neighbor that people complained about.
There was enough time to start the new unit and next week the homework is the grammar focus.
The trips that people planned were really excellent, but probably out of the price range for most people. Even though you can't visit all the places you listed on one trip it would be nice to visit them on individual ones in the future. Speaking of trips I won't be the only person traveling during the vacation. Ritsuko will be heading to Taipei and Yoshie might be going to Perth.
Have a good summer vacation and I will see you on the 22nd.
Masayo must be on her trip to Italy now. I hope she will send us a postcard. Yukio hasn't been here for awhile either, but I don't remember if she said she was going on a trip or not. Tonight was our last class before the break, so it will be over two weeks before we have a chance to hear what they are up to. Maybe they will post a comment during the break.
The homework for the break is to do the reading on page 41. Do parts A and B. Here is a link to the poem that I mentioned in class. Read it over and let me know what you think. Try reading it out loud.
A few people were gone today. Some of the news items today were about baseball, the floods and personal news. We went over the homework and people had some good advice for visitors to Tokachi. The one piece of advice everyone mentioned was the need to bring a light jacket or sweater. I remember going to a Rally Japan race that was at night and watching people from Honshu shivering because they were dressed in shorts and T-shirts. I guess no one told them this information.
We talked about the 30-day trip around the world. There were a lot of good ideas, so build on them for the homework next week. If you can mark your route on a world map. Make sure to list one thing you would like to see or do at every stop.
Maki has been really busy at her job. Even with the cold, wet weather a lot of people have been stopping by to enjoy ice cream. Yuki and Kieko bumped into each other on the train coming and going to Sapporo during the long weekend. Yoko enjoyed hiking over the Ocean Day Weekend.
Tonight we started Unit 6 and the first exercise was looking at the troubles between parents and children. The dialogue in the book sounded like my house. The grammar focus was two-part verbs. This link will take you to a site for the textbook that has some practices drills.
The homework for next week #5 A & B on page 38.
We practiced the information gap exercise again and people did a much better job with the questions. We also did two listening exercises, but the second one was more difficult. We will listen again next week, but check this link because it may help you in understanding the listening exercise.
Hopefully, Ikumi can make it next week, so she can share her experiences in preparing to go to Australia to study English. Remember not to do the reading on p. 35.
There were a lot of good news items today. This class probably has the best record for bring news every week. Yoshie did make a small mistake in talking about the price of the harpsichords made from the trees of the Hokkaido University campus that blew over in the typhoon a few years ago.
We talked about vacations and people had some interesting plans. We also did the information gap activity, but people had a little bit of trouble coming up with the questions. For homework next write out the 6 questions. This link will take you to a site that has some good information for planning a trip.
Yukiko and Kieko were absent tonight. We continued talking about travel and there were some good tips for visitors to Japan. Take a look at these tips and tell me what you think. Are they any good? Do you agree?
In our talk at the beginning of class we learned the Masayo is going to visit Italy during her summer vacation. I am sure she will have a wonderful time and I look forward to getting a postcard from her.
The homework for next class (7/24) is either #10 on page 34 or 12C on page 35. Also see what you can learn about Marine Day.
Sorry, I forgot to post something.
Masayo was back tonight, but she had another sunburn. She went to watch the Yosakoi festival in Otufuke and forgot her sunscreen. The trips that people planned were all very interesting, but they were all fictional. When I asked why no one talked about their real summer vacation plans Yukiko said we don't have time or money for a good nice trip. Everyone agreed with her. It sounds like I am the only person going somewhere this summer.
We did the interchange activity and looked at two different tour packages. This company offers a 15-day surfing tour in Indonesia. There were a lot of sites for skiing in Vermont, but most the prices were for last season.
The homework for next week is to think of 5 travel tips for people visiting Japan and do exercise #7 on page 33. Also don't look at the reading on page 35.
I think cutting back on the butter was a good idea for the sandwich and the suggestion to think about the ratio of peanut butter to banana is a good idea. Let me know if you come up with a better combination.
We talked about different kinds of snacks and shared our favorite ones. They all sounded very good. I will have to give them a try. There is no homework for next week.
There was also Ikumi's big news. Maybe this site will give you some ideas.
Well, did anyone go home and make the peanut butter and banana sandwich? Now be honest, it was better than you thought it was going to be. When I make it for the Wednesday morning class I will use less butter and make two sandwiches instead of one. I will let you know how it turns out.
We started the new unit and talked about vacations. The homework is to write about your summer vacations plans. If you don't have any, then use your imagination.
We continued practicing present perfect. I was surprised how few people had eaten at a vegetarian restaurant. I really though the number would be larger. This class wasn't anymore excited about eating the peanut butter and banana sandwich than the Monday night class. I still think that next week we will have to have a taste testing.
The homework for next week is to bring your favorite recipe translated into English. Make sure to have the steps on how to put all the ingredients together. Follow the examples in the book.
I forgot to put in this link to some information on Southern cooking.
We talked about food and listened how to make several kinds of snacks. We also talked about people's favorite snack. There was a good variety. In addition to that we also talked about comfort foods. Yoko was saying that she drinks coffee to relax and she said that drinking coffee made from freshly roasted beans is easier on your stomach. I looked around on the net and saw several sites that said something similar. They also said that darker roasted blends (French Roast) were much easier on your stomach and I have heard that they also have less caffeine.
The homework for next week write out your favorite recipe in English to share with the class. Also remember to give the vocabulary test site a try.
We went over the information that you got from your partners last week. There were a few common mistakes, but I think we got them worked out by the end. We started talking about ethnic foods and did the listening exercise. In the exercise they mentioned fried brains (receipe) and I said they were also called sweetbreads, but I was wrong. Sweetbreads come from a different part of the animal.
The homework for next week is #8 on page 24. Mark the common way those foods are cooked in Japan. We will compare lists next week.
Only Maki was absent tonight. Maybe she was busy getting ready for the soccer match tonight. We continued practicing the present perfect and talked about different ways of cooking. The homework for next week is #10 on page 25. Also don't read the exercise on page 27.
After asking about soup curry in class I decided to check on the net to see if I could find some background on how and why Sapporo became associated with soup curry. I found a lot of links that mention it, but none with any history. There was one article listed, but it is from a business magazine and you have to pay for it. If you can find anything in Japanese please let me know.
Some people had some interesting news items from the paper today and others had some personal news. Fumiko had a surprise visit from her son. He lives in Tsukuba, but wanted to take his new motorcycle for a ride and decided to come to Obihiro. He only stayed two hours. Ikumi met her boyfriend's folks for the first time. She said she was really nervous, but things went well.
We went over the homework and then talked more about making changes and things we would like to wish for. The homework for next week is to use the information from your partner to write sentences about their wishes. Also read the story again and do parts A and B
We talked about what people did over the weekend and checked the homework at the beginning of class. Tonight's lesson was about present perfect and simple past. If you want to do more practice you can go here. This is just one of many drills online If you put this simple past vs present perfect in a search engine you will get a lot of different links.
The homework for next week is #8 on page 24.

There were a lot of interesting sentences in the homework. There were a few small mistakes, but on the whole they were very good. We also did the listening exercise about capsule hotels. There are a lot of links on the internet, but this one is interesting.
The homework for next week is to research the words hope and wish. Look carefully how they are different. Also do 9A on page 20.
Yasuo joined us from the 3B class. He is having back to back classes tonight. He will probably be tired at the end of the next class. We went over the listening exercise and we decided that Terry was a parasite single. This is a link to a short reading about this problem.
The homework for next week is to write sentences using the answers to the questions that you asked your partner. Also do A-C on the reading we did at the end of class.
I am sorry that I forgot to post something for this class last week. When that happens please send me an e-mail and let me know. Wednesdays are kind of a hectic day for me, so it could happen again in the future.
Today we went over the homework and people came up with some interesting slogans for Tokachi. A lot of them had something to do with sky or plain. I mentioned that many states in the US have official motos that are often on the state license plate and slogans used for tourism. There are nicknames, too. Take a look and see which ones you like and what do you think Hokkaido should do.
We started the new unit and talked about making changes. When some people want a change they might decide to move to a different apartment or house. We practiced making comparisons and evaluations. The homework for next week is #3B and #6.
Only Yuki and Yoko tonight. At first it was only Yuki and she was very worried that it was only going to be her for the full class. After Yoko arrived she gave a big sigh of relief. Kieko went to Sapporo and Masayo has a cold. I am not sure what happened to Maki or Yukiko.
We went over the homework and then started the second part of the unit which is about "wishes". We will get everyone's ideas next week. The homework for next week is #9A on page 20.
We started things a little differently tonight. Instead of just talking about your weekends I asked you try to remember some interesting news you had read or heard. Every week, if you can, try to bring small news item to talk about. If you can't find anything interesting, you can still talk about your weekend.
We talked about making changes and I mentioned being in a rut. We will talk more about this point next week. Tonight our lesson focused more on apartments and houses. The homework for next we is related to this. Please do 3B on page 17 and 6 on page 18.
If you want to read more about the horse race go here.
Four people were absent today, so that just left Yoshie, Kazue and Mika. We went over the homework and their opinions about the problems in Obihiro were similar. They were also fairly similar ratings of the public services.
We looked at the common questions sightseers often ask and people knew most of the answers. We also looked at indirect questions. If you want to practice more you can go here.
The homework for next is to do #9A (answer the questions) and #11A (think of answers).
We had everyone here today. My guess that the teachers were taking part in May Day demonstrations was not correct. They all were doing something else. People had pretty quite holidays. Some people went to Sapporo, one to Tokyo and the others stayed around Obihiro. Maki did say that she sold over 200 ice cream cones in one day.
We went over the homework and people had to answer the questions about Obihiro. There was some trouble with the drug store question. Kieko said there was a drug store in the station and I said there wasn't. She was right and you can check here for the other shops.
We went over the reading and tried scanning for information again. This is a very important skill and something that makes finding information on English websites much easier.
Our three teachers were absent today, but I am not sure if it was because they had to attend a May Day demonstration or had other commitments. I mentioned May Day in class and there are other things that happen on May 1st. There is the Maypole Dance and May Day baskets.
There is a lot of homework for next time. First check the syllable stress in #10, then check the answers for the 7 questions in #11. For questions 3 and 6 the starting point is at the station. If you want to you can do #6 on page 10. Finally, don't do the reading on page 13.
Enjoy the holidays!
Ikumi, Yuko, and Fumiko were absent today. All I heard was that Fumiko had to attend a funeral and I am not sure about the other two. People found a lot of good information about their favorite actor.
We started Unit 2 and looked at compound nouns and count and noncount nouns. We also did the listening exercise about Singapore. Ritsuko was the only person who has been there. It took a few times, but people were finally able to get all the information.
The homework for next week is to do 3B and 5A. We will talk about them at the beginning of class next time. Remember there is no class next week.
Yuki is sick now, but Masayo was back. Masayo didn't look like she had much energy. She said she is busy at her new school. We had an observer this evening. Sakura wanted to see how difficult Step 3 was.
People shared information on their favorite actors and next week Yuki will tell us about Bruce Willis. After going over the homework we started Unit 2. In this unit will we will be talking about transportation problems and other issues of city living. The homework for next week is 3B on page 9 and think about the points in #5 on page 10.
Masayo said she will be absent next week because she has a PTA meeting. I wonder if Maki can make it because she might be busy with the Golden Week rush.
This class made some of the same mistakes as the Monday night class. I think after we talked about it people saw where they needed to be careful. We then talked about childhood memories and did the reading about Nicole Kidman and if you want to read more about her go here.
The homework for next week is to find out information on your favorite actor or singer. We will start Unit 2 next week.
As I mentioned Masayo is sick and she hopes to be able to come next week. From the symptoms that she described in the comment it sounds like she has the cold that I had. It may take her two weeks or more before she ready to come to class.
We went over the homework and some of the sentences people made using used to and didn't use to were different than they intended. In most cases it had the opposite meaning from what they intended.
We also went over the reading a practiced scanning. The homework for next week is to 13 B and C. If you want to read more about Nicole Kidman go here
Madoka came today, so the only person in the class who hasn't been here yet is Fumiko. I am sure she will be here next week or the week after. We used the first part of class to get to know each other a little better. We also practiced the conversation again. While you were practicing I checked the profiles you had written.
We did a question and answer activity and Yoko, Ritsuko, and Kazue discovered they had some things in common. In another activity I checked to see if there was a generation gap in thinking about the positive or negative aspects of certain changes. The two groups agreed about everything.
The homework for next we is to #8A and B. Remember don't look at the reading. We will do something with it in class next week.
I mentioned that Easter was coming up on Sunday and if you want to learn more about this holiday go here
It looks like Masayo did have to work late tonight. She hoped she could make it, but it didn't work out. Akiko was here from the Thursday 3G class. We went over the homework and talked a lot about ourselves. The homework for next week is to do exercise 8A and B. Also don't read the reading exercise on page 7. We will use it for something special in class.
This class like many of my classes this term is a mix of students from different classes. Several students are coming back after a short break and are a little rusty. I am sure after a little study they will be back up to speed in no time.
We spent the first half hour going over the textbook and meeting some of the people you don't know. Today we didn't spend too much time getting to know each other, but next week you will have a little more time.
The homework for next week is to write your profile and do the vocabulary exercise.
The questions provoked a lot of discussion and laughter tonight. I was surprised by the questions people selected. I thought they would have been more similar, but they were all over the place. I hope that Minori, Yusuke and Yoko all get well this week, so they can join us at the end of term events.
Yoko was sick so she didn't come to class and Uro also couldn't make it tonight. We did have a student from Braden's Monday night 3B class.
We went over the homework and people did a good job guessing the places that people gave directions to. The problem was that the directions didn't include many of the prepositions of movement that we studied the week before.
We did the listening about animal intelligence and talked a little bit about pets. After that we moved on to the grammar point on page 93. The homework for next week is to keep a list of all the requests that people make of you in the coming week. Then in class next week you will tell your partner what they were using the pattern we looked at tonight.
Remember next week is the last class. If you haven't signed up for the new semester do it as quickly possible and sign up for the end of term events.
I didn't think we would have that many people tonight so I had fewer tables set up. We ended up having to add a table. We went over the homework and focused on prepositions of movement. We practiced giving directions and the homework for next week think of three places in downtown Obihiro and what directions would give to tell someone to get there. Remember that your starting point is on the north side of the station by the statues.
People weren't at their best tonight. Some were 80% with others as low as 60%. I think I was the only one who was 100%!. We went over the homework and talked about how we had misjudged people because of the way they looked or were dressed. I liked Minori's story. She said one time an elderly gentleman came to her office and she thought he was looking for one of the rooms in the facility that seniors use for planning shogi or igo because he was dressed casually in rumpled clothing. She politely gave him directions, but it turns out he was a city assembly member there to see her boss.
We started the new unit and focused on geographic features. These aren't things that we use everyday, but if you are traveling it is important to be familiar with the geographical features of where you are visiting. After that we did a listening exercise and it took people three tries before they got most of it.
The homework for next week is to #4 on page 88 and #5 on page 89-90. Also look over the tapescript on page 136 for the listening exercise we did in class. Please resist the temptation to look over the rest of the listening exercises in the unit.
We had a small class tonight. When people came in they did a double take because of the smaller table configuration.
We went over the homework about facial expressions and first impressions. Uro talked a little about how he judges people when he does job interviews. The words cleanliness and cleanness came up. I tried to explain the difference in usage, but I am not sure if I made myself very clear.
After class tonight we enjoyed the chocolates that Minori brought with tea and coffee in Bucky Hall. We also got hear another of her jokes. It was a really funny one about politicians and I asked why you didn't hear these kind of jokes on Japanese TV. Everyone said it was taboo, so the comedians make most of their jokes about other entertainers. Here is a link to some examples of political humor in the States. As a matter of fact, one of the most popular shows on TV now in the U.S. is the The Daily Show a parody of the evening news broadcast and it is mostly poltical humor and satire.
The homework for next week is to prepare a story about a time when your first impression of someone was wrong. Give as many details as possible about the setting and what happened. Use phrasal verbs if you can.
We reviewed expressing are opinions and showing disagreement. After that we did the listening exercise with the song Do you Believe in Magic by Lovin' Spoonful. We listened to the conversation where the women advised her friend that he didn't need a new suit for his job interview. About half the class thought it was good advice. Read this article and see if you still agree with this advice.
The homework for next week is to #8 on pages 83 and 84.
Sorry, about the low energy level tonight. This cold really has me in its grip. The medicine I take to help me fight the cold makes me a little sleepy. I hope that I can get over it in a week and that I will be okay by next Tuesday.
People talked about their trips and some people had some very specific plans while others were very general. After going over the homework we moved on to Unit 10. We did a listening exercise about sport superstitions. We also practiced how to say that we believe something or don't believe something. We will do a little more work with this next week.
The homework for next week is the Focus on Grammar on page 80.
We had a observer tonight and he had something in common with Hitoshi. Hitoshi is a vet and Takuya is a vet student. Yoko and Uro also had something in common tonight because they both had a cold. Hopefully, no one else will catch it.
Three people said that they found the answer to my bonus homework question last week, but then forgot their notes at home. The answer is Isabella Bird and if you want to read more about her go here. I have some information somewhere about her travels in Hokkaido, so I will look around and see if I can find it.
We talked about improving fluency and looked at the six tips listed in the book. Then you had a chance to practice by thinking about a special trip for me and making presentation. The homework for next week is to plan two-week trip to somewhere you would like to go. Your budget is 500,000 yen. Give as many details as you can.
Almost everyone was here tonight. Yumiko couldn't make it because of her back. We went over the homework and Minori had another good joke for us. She said it is too stressful to try to remember them, so tonight will be the last one for awhile.
People did a good job with role plays and came up with some very imaginative conversations. The homework for next week is to do the grammar focus and read #13. The bonus homework is to find the famous woman explorer who came to Japan in the early Meiji era.
Shinobu just told me that Yumiko called and said she can't come to class because she has a cold and she hurt her back. I wonder if she did when she was snowboarding? (Joke) Hitoshi and Momo were also absent tonight. I am not sure what their reasons were.
We continued with unit on travel that had started before the break. We went over the conversation and I asked people if they thought Angela and Henry were married or single. Yoshie said they were single and when I asked her why she thought so she said it was because they weren't arguing. If they were married and lost, then they would be fighting over whose fault it was and what they should do next. That is the same answer that I think most Americans would give, too.
We went over the present perfect continous and there are links that will give answers to Uro's questions.
The homework for next week is to think of how you would do the conversations for 7c, both as a customer and service person. Also do 9a-g.
I am looking forward to hearing Minori's new joke next week.
We did the special crossword puzzle and word search this evening. I didn't think that the crossword would give you so much trouble, but it did. It does point out how important it is to have a certain level of cultural literacy to help in understanding movies, books, or listening activities. If you would like to know a little more about the Christmas traditions and customs you can go here or here.
There are a lot of people from this class coming to the party, but for those can't make it I hope that you will have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
We continued talking about traveling and did the listening exercise where people talked about their best and worst travel experiences. A good question came up and that was what is the difference between travel and trip. If you look at the definition for travel and the one for trip you will notice the difference. Again pay attention to what part of speech the word belongs to.
The homework for next week is to write about your worst or best travel experience. Try to use the words from the vocabulary section we looked at.
Minori thank you again for the potato chips. They tasted very good with my beer last night.
We went over the homework about countable and uncountable nouns. If you would like a little more practice go here or here.
We did a timed reading about ostriches and I mentioned that there was another ostrich craze in the 1990s. This article is kind of long and difficult, but if you scan it you will be able to see how the prices for the birds changed in such a short time.
After that we started the next unit which is about travel. We listened to the song On the Road Again. It was made famous by Willie Nelson. The homework for next week is to read quotes about travel and think about what they mean. Which one is closets to your way of thinking.
I am sorry Yumiko that I didn't get this up sooner. I usually do it after class, but last night I was enjoying your delicious shortbread. This morning I got sidetracked with getting ready for my Chikudai classes and never got anything posted. I just got back from Chikudai a few minutes ago.
There were some interesting recipes besides Yumiko's shortbread. I wonder if anyone else will bring samples. I will bring my suet pudding on the 13th so that everyone can have a taste. I bet few of you will like. It really isn't a flavor that most Japanese people like.
We did the two listening exercises and you did a better job than I thought you would. I was impressed with the way you got so much information from the pictures that accompanied the folk tale. It is something to keep in mind when you are reading or listening to something with pictures. They are there to help you, so use them.
The homework for next week is to do #9 and #10. Also don't do the reading on page 67.
It is a cold and windy, so we will see how many people show up tonight. We will have a fire in the fireplace, so come early or stay late and enjoy it. Tonight will be perfect weather for it. Drive carefully tonight because the roads will be really slippery.
Only a few people have done the homework so far. Will everyone wait until the last minute to comment?
Some people brought there homework because they don't have a computer which is okay. I noticed that there were some problems with last week's post so go back and take a look again. There are some very good links that didn't show up last time.
We moved on to the unit on food and we started off with a quiz on food history. I think this is the company that the quiz was talking about.
The homework for next class is to bring the steps for making your favorite recipe.
Tonight was the first time we have had perfect attendance this semester and we had the added plus of Chiaki from Braden's class. It is a good thing we moved to the bigger room. We practiced negotiating and people did a pretty good job. We looked at when to use will or going to. Here are two good links (1)(2) that give more information on how to use these forms. At the bottom of the page in the first link there are links to some exercises.
The types of pages I linked to are examples I mentioned of what is available on the net. When you want try to correct a particular problem that you are having you should look for more practice materials on the net.
Remember you are to post a comment about your plans for the Labor Thanksgiving Day holiday ont he 23rd.
Sorry about that.! I am pretty sure that I had typed something, but I must have forgotten to hit the publish button. I had some links and everything. I guess I will have to try to recreate what I had.
I know that I had a link to Oseola McCarty and I mentioned that Uro and Hitoshi thought that people who donated money were hypocrites because they were doing to for recognition. Here is a link to some academic papers on why people give money to charity. Here is some information on how much money Americans donated last year. Do you think you can find some numbers for Japan?
Finally here is a to some information on bartering.
We moved to a bigger room today, so things will be a little easier. It is interesting that in a big room everyone decided to sit at the far end.
At the beginning of class people shared something new about themselves. The first look everyone gave me was really funny, but in the end everyone could come up with something to talk about. After that we checked the homework. People talked about the eccentric people that they know.
In tonight's lesson we talked about money and the listening exercise was about the movieIt could happen to you. It is supposedly based on a true story and according to Snopes it is, but like it says in the listening exercise there are some differences between the movie and reality.
The homework for next week is to find one or two Japanese sayings about money. Translate them into English and be prepared to explain the meaning. Also do the reading on page 55 a-e.
I would like to thank Uro for bringing the information about the QR Code and if you like more information about it you can go here
We went over the homework and talked about eccentricity. There were many difficult words in the reading, but an important skill is to try to understand them without using your dictionary. You need to look at the context in which they are used and you may be able to guess the rough meaning. The homework for next week is to write about an eccentric person's that you know.
The other part of the homework was the vocabulary exercise using prefixes. Yumiko asked if there were any rules. I could find any thing, but I did find this page. It will give you a lot more information and some practice exercises.
This class keeps growing so next week we will move to Room 203. It is a little bit bigger, so it won't feel so crowded.
Momo was able to make to class tonight, but Uro was busy so will do a make up class on Friday. We had an observer and Hitoshi did join the class after observing last week. During the introduction time I noticed that people were having some communication problems because they were talking too softly. Remember that sometimes it isn't your English that is the problem, but how loud you are speaking. When people don't have confidence in their English they sometimes speak quietly which makes it harder to communicate. So remember to speak up.
We did a listening exercise about personality testing. As you can see from this link there are many different types. We alos heard about graphology and phrenology.
The grammar focus tonight was greunds as subjects and after prepositions. There is more information about it here.
The homework for next week is to do number 11 on page 48 and number 13 on page 49-50. For the reading try doing it three times before using your dictionary.
We went over the homework and practiced introducing people. We focused on giving a little information about each person. Uro made a good point and that was no information, no conversation. The little bit of information you give can be the difference between a conversation starting or never taking off. We will practice this more next week.
We listened to the song Friends in the book. I asked what Japanese songs there were about friends, but people could only think of a few. I found this list. Take a look and see how many you know. I didn't know very many.
Welcome to the new students. I hope that you will post comments every week. We started Unit 6 and talked about the different types of friends. We had a discussion about company friends towards the end of class and how there may have been a change since the bubble era.
The vocabulary exercise had some very useful prepositions with verbs and adjectives. The homework for next week is to do #5 A, B and C on page 45.
Mina and Yoko were here for make up classes. Mina is very busy studying for her entrance exams, so she will be taking a break from October. Hopefully, she can come back for a few weeks after she passes her exam. We finished the unit last week, so instead of starting a new one tonight we had a discussion instead. Yumiko started it with a question about books. The discussion went very well and you were able to make the transition to other topics very smoothly. I must say I was impressed with how well you did. I think if you can remember to react to what people say before you ask your next question you will be able to have even smoother discussions.
In the discussion of books comics came up and we talked about the difference between American comics and Japanese style comics. I mentioned the graphic novels and how they were more similar and were probably inspired by Japanese comics. I have never read one, but when I go to the States next time I will have a look.
Remember if you are coming to the end of term events you need to sign up for English Cooking (Tues. 27) or have a booth at the English Flea Market (Wed. 28) and you need to buy a ticket for the International Party on the Thurs. the 29th
No visitors tonight. We looked at some everyday items and you had to explain what they were and how to use them. There was one carpentry tool that Yumiko didn't know. Uro is going to check on the Japanese name.
We read the article about Chindogu and Uro came up with an idea very quickly. I mentioned the Rube Goldberg Machine which is also a very interesting concept.
The homework for next week is to come up with a Chindogu idea.
We had an interesting discussion at the beginning of class about the election and absentee ballots. I explained the procedure in Alaska. Here are the instructions.
The focus of tonight's lesson was phrasal verbs. This site looks like it might have some interesting practice drills.
The homework for next is to do the reading on page 41 and do parts b, and c.
Visitors outnumbered regular students tonight. We had Momo, Ayumi, and Yoshie with us. We had a good time describing different objects. The first activity was talking about something that is special to us. I talked about a chair that had belonged to my grandfather. I will try to post a photo later. The techniques we practiced tonight are very useful for when you don't know the name of something.
The homework for next week is #9 and #10. Also think of one item you use regularly and explain to use it.
Here are some pictures of the chair. The teddy bear was made by mother from an old wool shirt of my fathers. He wasn't happy because it was one of his favorites!

Most people had a good summer vacation, but Momo's was very short. Ichiko went to Shiretko with her husband and daughter. Yumiko's mother got out of the hospital so she was a happy, but a little busier.
We started Unit 5 and the first activity was a reading about Willie Nelson. Only Uro and I knew who he was. In looking for information on him I came across this which is ironic because we were talking about this topic in relation to my new car. I would really like to use it here in Hokkaido if I could.
The grammar focus tonight was relative clauses. The link gives a lot of good information so take a look. The homework for next week is to write about an object that has special meaning for you.
We ended up with four people tonight because Yoshie from Chris' class joined us. We went over the homework and did the memory game. People did much better than I thought they would. Next time I will make it more difficult.
We talked about people's favorite memory of a summer vacation. I thought people would talk about some childhood memory, but everyone talked about things they did with their families or when they were adults.
Hopefully, the weather will get nicer and we will have a better August than July. Have a good summer vacation and I will see you on the 23rd
Here is the link I mentioned about the compound adjectives. Also the spelling for whatchamacallit and
Some interesting descriptions tonight, but I think everyone good see the importance of word choice when trying to create a specific image. We talked about memory and the words forget and remember. We also did a listening activity which talked about a memory champion. I mentioned that a Japanese man just set a record for reciting pi from memory. The homework for next week is to write your opinion about what is more important; memorizing or remembering everyday things.
Uro pulled a good practical joke on me last night. I didn't see Momo come in so he easily tricked me. Yumiko's garbanzo bean paste was very good. I am enjoying all of her cooking samples. We went over the homework and practiced using the past continous. For more practice go here.
We did the reading about Franco Magnani and his ability to paint scenes from his memory. I challenged your memories by not letting you go back to the article when you answered the questions. The homework for next week is #6 on page 30. Describe a place from your past and give as much detail as you can. Your partner should be able to picture the place from your description.
Makoto joined us from Braden's 3B class on Monday. We went over the homework and it turns out that Uro was the only strongly anti-TV person in the class. Everyone else felt there were some good points to television. I thought Uro's points that we must very skeptical about what we see on TV and question if we are getting the truth or not were good ones.
We moved on to Unit 4 and people found the listening exercises challenging. I felt a little sorry for Makoto having to listen to us old fogies talking about what TV used to be like when we were young. The homework for next week is to do the vocabulary and grammar exercises.
We went over the homework of working with adjectives with -ed/-in endings and I think by the end people were getting the hang of it. If you want more practice you can go here. The other part of the homework was working with modals and expressions for obligation and permission. There are many sites where you can practice more. You can go here.
We used the reading exercise a little differently today, but I don't think it was too difficult. The person who had to read the B article had a little more trouble. There was some interesting information in them and if you look around on the internet you will find much more. At the end of class I mentioned the Turn off TV Week and this link will take you to the site. I can't find the link to the other site I mentioned, but I will keep looking.
I will post more later, but Yumiko said she wanted to see what the new blog will look like so here is thelink.
We did the listening exercise about a guy who had been an extra in some TV shows. This site in the UK provides information on how to get on different TV shows. I guess if you were planning a trip to London and wanted to be on TV this would be the site to check.
I have to agree with the comment that Uro made. I really don't think there are as many good shows on TV now. I am really glad I haven't had to sit through all the reality shows that have become so popular in the States. I think I could easily live without a TV because I get most of my news from the internet now.
At the beginning of class I mentioned this newspaper site as an example of how a newspaper can put together a good site. I really like the links to the different neighborhoods/cities in the Seattle and Western Washington area. I think that type of thing would be a nice addition to the Kachimai site. (hint, hint Uro!)
Momo thank you for coming to the class tonight Yumiko was very glad to have the company. We went over the homework and Momo had already done the grammar focus in her regular class. We talked about movies and the ones that people liked. At the end of class we talked about the movie Rear Window, but had a a little trouble with the meaning. There was also some confusion over the words rent and lend. It sounded like the famous Who's on First comedy routine by Abbot and Costello.
The homework for next week is to watch the movie Rear Window and also write a movie about a movie that you like.
Tonight Uro was absent, so it was just Yumiko and Ichiko. We went over the homework and they both did an excellent job. I hope that they will post what they wrote in the comments so everyone can read them. I am sure that Uro is planning to post his homework.
We moved on to Unit 3 which the theme of movies and television. We did the listening exercise and went over the grammar point present perfect simple using still/yet/already. By the end of class I think you both had the hang of it, but we will practice more next week. I know I said there wasn't any homework, but I think you should do 3d again just for the practice and writing out the sentences will help you to remember how the pattern is used.
Momo decided to join us again this week. I think she has done all of her make up classes for now, so she probably won't be back for awhile.
No one had prepared much news, but Uro mentioned that the Kachimai is going to be selling a months worth of the newspaper on a CD. This brought up the topic of how tough the newspaper business is in the US right now. This is a link to regional newspaper something like the Kachimai that is doing a lot of interesting things with the internet.
We went over the homework and people didn't have too much trouble with it, but if you want more practice go here or here.
The homework is to write a paragraph like the one in the book describing one of the items in #12. Be a detailed as possible.
Ikuko was absent tonight because she had to babysit. We didn't have anyone doing a substitution class, so it was just Yumiko and Uro. We went over the homework about their three favorite words and I shared my favorite Japanese word 懐かしい . The other part of the homework was the article about synesthesia. Uro didn't have a chance to read the whole thing, so Yumiko read it out loud. She did a very good job. After that we did the listening. It was interesting and it introduced some good vocabulary.
The homework for next week is #11 a-d on page 15.
Ayami has left for Australia, so we are down to three people, but tonight Momo joined us. We had a lot of fun and I think people learned a lot of new words. If you want to work more on building your vocabulary go here.
The homework for next week is to think of three of your favorite English words or phrases and why you like them. Also read the article on page 13. Don't worry about doing the exercises because we will do them in class. The first time you read the article don't use a dictionary.
We went over the homework and talked about the good points and bad points of being a teenager. Chikai (from Chris's class) said she wished she could be a teenager again, but Yumiko said, "No, way!" She didn't want to be a teenager again. In the discussions people often used everything and anything, but occasionally you used them incorrectly. I thought I could find a page with some good examples, but I haven't yet. I will keep looking.
We moved on to Unit 2 which is titled making sense . We did the reading and looked at the examples of text messaging short cuts. There was a little misunderstanding about text messaging. Maybe this definition might help. Here is also a list of abbreviations.
I forgot to write down the word that Yumiko used to describe the new sport. Hopefully, she will post something in the comments and then I will look it up.
Ayami was in Sapporo tonight so it was only Uro, Yumiko and Ichiko. We talked about the train derailment near Osaka. Ichiko also mentioned an incident at Obihiro City Hall where and elderly man tried to set fire to the building.
We started out looking at the Calvin and Hobbs cartoon in the book. It brought up a lot of good, everyday vocabulary which we talked about for a long time. We also did the listening exercise and people had some trouble with it. The homework for Golden Week is to write about the good points and bad points of being a teenager.
I forgot to mention that the deadline for signing up for Eiken is the 18th. Think about challenging the test.
We talked about the news and then went over the homework. Yumiko is going to check to see if she can find out if Nathan is a real person. We moved on and talked about chores that people dislike and don't mind. There was a real mix of things. There were really no two things that people shared. I forgot to mention that I don't like to wash my car. I very happy to pay someone to do it, but other car maintenance chores I will do.
The homework for next week is #10 the grammar focus.
Here is a link to information on the Nigerian e-mail scam I mentioned.
Update: Uro mentioned the pet and microwave story, but it is considered an urban myth.
Tonight everyones news article was exactly what I was looking for. Everything was just every day news. The pond that Uro was talking about is the one behind the Centennial Museum.
We did the listening exercise and we heard two people starting a conversation. We heard the different phrases you can use, but when we tried it people didn't use them. We will practice again next week.
The homework is to do number 7 and make sure to do a-d.
The class was a strange one tonight. I have cold, Uro and Yumiko both have colds. Ichiko and Ayami were the only healthy ones, so they worked as pairs so as not to get them sick. There was a lot of coughing, wheezing and nose blowing tonight.
We started out talking a little bit about the goals the students have for the class and what I would like to try to do this year. I want to really help you overcome some of the bad speaking habits that you have developed, so I may be correcting you more than you are normally used to.
The first unit is about work and leisure. We talked about words that might used for this topic. I mentioned that I saw an interview with the Japanese finance minster and he said that in the future Japanese people want to be rich in time not just money. They want to have to have the time to do the things that they want to do. The one problem with this is that it sometimes takes a lot of money. If you like to travel this site looks interesting.
Remember next week the homework is to bring a short news article about something in Obihiro, Tokachi or Hokkaido. Please check the vocabulary before class. Don't try to translate it on the spot.
I thought it was only going to be Yoshie tonight, but we had one observer and Misako doing a make up class. We talked about the idea of your hometown or where you are from. Misako is going to move to Nagoya for school and Ayumi (the observer) just moved back from Tokyo, so we talked about how to describe Obihiro and what they liked about their hometown.
The last class and Yumi got a private lesson. I had exchanged e-mails with Kiriko earlier in the week and she said she was coming, but something must have come up. She said last time she was busy doing her taxes.
Yumi and I talked about many different topics. We started with retirement, moved on to travel, then moving, Easter, Alaska and parenting. It was an interesting class. I hope to see the rest of you next term. If you have any questions about the schedule next term e-mail Shinobu or give her a call.
Yuki had good news. He passed the entrance exam to the high school he wanted to enter. He now needs to decide if he is going to play basketball or not.
We went over the table manner quiz that I linked to last week. There were a few that people couldn't agree on. One was the correct way to eat sushi. Should you dip the rice in to soy sauce or the fish. Looking around on the net I found that it is a common argument. I guess to each his own.
The new semester begins April 4, but I hope that many of you will come to the Spring Events. There is a lot do and you will have many chances to speak English.
It was only Miyuki today because Sayuri had to do some things for her neighborhood association. I thought Midori might join us, but she didn't show up. Miyuki and I talked about many, many different topics. We talked about travel, music, books, raising children and so on. She asked about mystery writers and there was one I wanted to tell her about, but I couldn't remember his name. It was on the tip of my tongue, but it just wouldn't come out. I had to look it up after class. The person I was thinking aobut was Tony Hillerman. I have read most of his book and in looking at his site I see that he has a new book. I will have to have my son pick up a copy when he is in the States.
It was nice to have a big class today. Kenshi was doing a make up class because last night he had a farewell party. He is going to be moving to Tokyo next week. I hope he will check this site sometimes and send an e-mail letting us know how he is doing. Mayumi has been busy at work because it is the end of the fiscal year.
Yuki gets the big news tomorrow, but I am sure he will be okay. He said he will send me an e-mail with the news.
We talked about table manners some more and there was some disagreements on what are proper Japanese table manners. Here is one site and this is a one that gives more details. This link will take you to a page with many more links to some interesting sites. You should take this quiz on Japanese table manners and see how you do.
The homework for next week is think of a list of dos and don'ts eating in Japan for Amy and Chris.
Kenshi couldn't make it tonight because he had a farewell party tonight, so he will be coming tomorrow. Yoshie and I talked about a variety of topics, but as usual we came back to talking about raising children and how stressful and worrying it can be. The 28th will be our last class, so I hope that Yukari can make it.
Kayo was back today and Sayuri joined us from the Thursday 3K class. She has to miss class next Thursday, so she decided to do a make up class today.
We went over the homework and finished talking about the sexual equality. Sayuri took advantage of, what some people might say is a sexist policy, the 1000 yen movie day for women on Thursdays. Here is an aritcle about sexism and toilets. If you click on the link for TitleVii you will be able read the civil rights law which was passed in 1964 that covers race and sex discrimination.
We jumped up and started the unit on time. I mentioned the song Time by Hootie and The Blowfish, but no one had heard of them or the song. I must admit that, except for the songTime, I didn't know any of their other work.
The homework for next week is to find some Japanese proverbs about time and translate them into English.
We started the unit on table manners. The first exercise was about toasts. This site will tell you more about the history of toast giving and some examples for different occasions.
After talking about toasts we went through the sentences and questions we might hear while having dinner. I mentioned that some families might say grace before they begin eating. If you go to this site you find some traditional prayers used before eating.
The homework for next week is to answer the 12 questions in #6 on page 67.
Sayuri and Miyuki I forgot to give you your evaluations again this week. Please remind me next class.
A good talk with Yuki and Yumiko tonight. Yuki feels confident about his entrance exam, but won't know anything until next Wednesday. We started talking about the unit on table manners and we talked about making a toast. Here is a site with toasts for many different occasions. We also talked about table manners and I mentioned in some situations people will say grace before they begin eating. Go here for some different examples.
The homework for next week is to do #5 and #6 p. 67
Kiriko and Kayo were absent, but Sayuri was doing a make up class today. I felt a little sorry for her because she had covered the same material last week. One nice thing about this book is there is room for discussion and students always bring in new information.
At the beginning Sayuri talked about the new coffee shop in the Fugi Maru Department Store. Inoda Coffee is from Kyoto and is supposed to very famous. I will have to make a trip downtown to check it out.
The homework for next week is to answer questions a-f, but from a Japanese perspective.
Miyuki was surprised and a little worried when I told that Sayuri couldn't make it today because she had to take care of her sick niece. She thought she was going to have do the full lesson by herself. Luckily, 15 minutes into the class Midori showed up to do a make up lesson.
We finished talking about the unit on men and women. It was a little difficult for Midori because she didn't have all the background that we talked about last week.
There is no homework for next week. And Midori said that she will come again next week.
Yumiko almost had a private lesson today, but Chizuko showed up about half way through class. Before she arrived Yumiko talked about the near collision of the JAL and ANA planes at Chitose Aiport.
We talked about the homework and many other topics so we didn't start the new unit liked I had planned. I mentioned some links in the 3B class post about the number of women in the military in the US and Japan. That lead to a question about military service in the US. Chizuko wanted to know if men were required to serve in the military, but in America now it is voluntary. Here is a link to page that explains about the draft.
No homework for next week except to bring a news item. Best of luck to Yuki on Thursday.
Here is the saying I mentioned:
If March comes in like a lamb, it will go out like a lamb. If it comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.
I would say March came in like a lamb, so we should expect stormy weather at the end of March.
Kenshi got the bad news last week. He is being transferred and he will be going to Tokyo. He moves at the end of next month. His schedule will be really busy so he will probably be able to make it to only one more class.
We did Unit 30 about men and women. I asked Kenshi about women in the Ground Self-Defense Forces and he wasn't sure of the numbers. This site gives the numbers for 2001 in the US military.
I found this:
Approximately 6,000 women serve in support roles in Japan's Self-Defense Forces.
from this site, but I think the numbers are old.
Yoshie and Kenshi's answers to the questions were similar to the rest of the classes. I would say that most people in the US would answer in a similar way. We did talk a little about the decline in the number of single women who said they don't want to get married. Here is thearticle. If you look at the bottom you will see it was a small sample, so I wonder how accurate it is. It would be interesting to see how women would answer if they were asked if they wish they had never gotten married.
Next week we will take a look at the second half of the unit. For homework do numbers 5 and 6.
No Kayo today. Hopefully, she hasn't gotten the flu. Hearing what Hans went through last week it doesn't sound very pleasant.
We talked a little more about Japanese holidays and festivals. This class too, to thinks that people aren't celebrating traditional festivals as much as they used. too. They think part of the reason is fewer children and not living near an extended family.
We moved on to Unit 30 and discussed men and women. Everyone's opinions were pretty similar, but much more different than Deema's. Here is the one gives another approach. The first article is very long, so just skim over and see what you can get from it.
Miyuki the cheese cake was out of this world. I happened to have some Starbucks house blend coffee to go with it. There was no one in the office, the phone didn't ring, so I could really sit back and savor them.
We talked about the rest of Unit 30 and Sayuri tried to explain her feelings about . She couldn't think of the words she needed to explain herself, so she will think about it and share it with us later. The homework for next week is to answer the questions on page 65.
We worked on the second part of Unit 30 and talked about the different situation and what the people should do in each one. We pretty much agreed that some of the things don't happen in Japan and others were very common. There seemed to be a little misunderstanding about the word sexist and why the boyfriend might be considered sexist for offering to carry his girlfriend's books.
The listening exercise was difficult and we will probably listen to it again next week. The homework for next week is to answer the questions in #7 on page 65.
Yoshie and I had a good talk tonight. I am not sure what happened to Yukari, but Kenshi is having maneuvers in Shikaoi this week I think.
Yoshie and I talked about parenting issues (her youngest son and my son are almost the same age) and many other topics. We also talked about the homework which was to think about Japanese holidays and festivals. She said she was surprised by how many holidays and festivals Japan has. I wonder if Japan will ever cut any of the public holidays it has. The tradition has been to make the birthday of a deceased Emperor a new holiday and then the new Emperor's birthday a national holiday. Will that tradition continue? What do you think?
Yumiko talked about the smoking ban in Bhutan. It is an interesting experiment, but I wonder how successful it will be. Yumi showed us some pictures done by her favorite painter. She wanted some information on her background, so I suggested putting something in a search engine to see what she could find. Maybe she can post something in the comments to let us know what she turned up.
We talked about holidays and festivals and the homework next week is to answer the four questions in the book, but about Japan.
Sayrui mentioned that she was making miso and explained the steps. It is a time consuming process, but I am sure it is worth the effort when you taste the final product. Miyuki's news was about Shizunai High School. The high school started a thoroughbred breeding program a few years ago and the first horse from the program just won its first race.
This topic lead to a discussion about the merging of towns and villages. It seems none of the municipalities in Tokachi have been able to agree on plan. After talking about equality between men and women into today's lesson we ended up talking about the slow food movement and new catch phrase slow life. In some ways these movements may help smaller communities to survive.
Mayumi was back tonight after a two-week absence. She said she went to Tokyo last week for four days. It sounds like she had a good time.
I was little surprised how much trouble people had talking about Japanese holidays and festivals. The answers most people gave were, I don't know. or Nothing special.. I wasn't too surprised by those answers for Japanese civic holidays because there doesn't seem to be much that people do except fly the Japanese national flag.
We moved on to the unit about men and women. Both groups disagreed with most of the statements, but as I said if you asked your grandparents they would probably be closer to Deema's opinions.
The homework for next week is #5 on page 65 and Asuna needs to send a postcard from Osaka.
We had a little misunderstanding about the homework. Yoshi thought that I meant foreigners stereotypes of Japanese, but I wanted Japanese stereotypes of foreigners. We still discussed it a little at the beginning of class. We also spent some time talking about the LiveDoor purchase of Nihon Broadcasting stock. I mentioned several words that you might see when reading about this type of article.
We then moved on to the unit on holidays and talked about the ones people had never heard of. If you want to know more about them all you need to do is put the name in a search software and you will get tons of information. For example here is a link to information on the Day of the Dead
The homework for next week is to do #5 and also answer the questions for Japan and yourself.
We finished up the topic of stereotypes and I think you should read the posting for the 3C class that I made on Tuesday. I think you will find it interesting.
We started Unit 29 and talked about holidays. There was a little confusion about National Foundation Day, but I think this link will clear it up. This link came from this site.
The homework for next week is to write about how people celebrate the different national holidays in Japan. Are there any special foods or events?
Well, Uro joined us from Step 3G on Thursday night. It was his first time to take a class from me. I hope he had a good time and learned something new.
People did their homework and thought about the stereotypes that Japanese have of foreigners. I liked Yumiko's idea of asking her neighbors and family what they thought. Yuki asked a good question about negetive and positive stereotypes. Below is some good information about stereotypes.
Stereotypes
A "stereotype" is a generalization about a person or group of persons. We develop stereotypes when we are unable or unwilling to obtain all of the information we would need to make fair judgments about people or situations. In the absence of the "total picture," stereotypes in many cases allow us to "fill in the blanks." Our society often innocently creates and perpetuates stereotypes, but these stereotypes often lead to unfair discrimination and persecution when the stereotype is unfavorable.
For example, if we are walking through a park late at night and encounter three senior citizens wearing fur coats and walking with canes, we may not feel as threatened as if we were met by three high school-aged boys wearing leather jackets. Why is this so? We have made a generalization in each case. These generalizations have their roots in experiences we have had ourselves, read about in books and magazines, seen in movies or television, or have had related to us by friends and family. In many cases, these stereotypical generalizations are reasonably accurate. Yet, in virtually every case, we are resorting to prejudice by ascribing characteristics about a person based on a stereotype, without knowledge of the total facts. By stereotyping, we assume that a person or group has certain characteristics. Quite often, we have stereotypes about persons who are members of groups with which we have not had firsthand contact.
Television, books, comic strips, and movies are all abundant sources of stereotyped characters. For much of its history, the movie industry portrayed African-Americans as being unintelligent, lazy, or violence-prone. As a result of viewing these stereotyped pictures of African-Americans, for example, prejudice against African-Americans has been encouraged. In the same way, physically attractive women have been and continue to be portrayed as unintelligent or unintellectual and sexually promiscuous.
Stereotypes also evolve out of fear of persons from minority groups. For example, many people have the view of a person with mental illness as someone who is violence-prone. This conflicts with statistical data, which indicate that persons with mental illness tend to be no more prone to violence than the general population. Perhaps the few, but well-publicized, isolated cases of mentally ill persons going on rampages have planted the seed of this myth about these persons. This may be how some stereotypes developed in the first place; a series of isolated behaviors by a member of a group which was unfairly generalized to be viewed as a character of all members of that group.
This block of text is from here which is part of a guide for teachers on how to teach about the Holocaust.
We moved on to the unit about holidays and festivals. There were a few in the list that people didn't know. To learn more about each on all you would have to do is put the name in a search engine. The homework for next week is to answer the questions in #5 (p. 63) about Japan and yourself.
Midori must have finished up her make up classes because she didn't come today.
We talked about the TV show that they remembered and the impression that got of America from it. Sayuri mentioned Bewitched and Miyuki picked The Lucy Show. What impressed them most when they were children was the size of the homes and cars, plus the number of electrical appliances. Sayuri also mentioned she was surprised how on Bewitched the parents left their children with a babysitter.
We talked about Ben's interview and his view of America. His view was shared by a lot of people in the last presidential election. There has been a lot of talk about the divided America and this link will take you to an article about it.
The homework for next week is to think about Japanese stereotypes of foreigners.
Misako and Kenshi joined us tonight, so we had a little larger class than normal. I am sorry I forgot give you your evaluations last night. I had meant to give them out at the end of class. Don't let me forget next week.
We went over the vocabulary again this week and there were many that people had already forgotten. One way to help you remember those words is to associate them with someone you know.
We moved on the Ben's comments about America and the idea of stereotypes. I mentioned that in the last presidential election you could hear many of the things Ben said. Here is a link to a article about this subject.
The homework for next week is to make a list of the stereotypes of foreigners that Japanese people have. To get ideas look around the net or watch TV.
Well, I thought it was just going to be Yukari and Kenshi tonight, but Kenshi called before class to say he couldn't make it. With only Yukari, it gave me a chance to find out about her stay in Canada. It sounds like she really used her time there effectively to learn English. She studied English, but she did everything she could to use English everyday. One of the biggest misconceptions about studying overseas is that you will become a good English speaker naturally. Sorry, but that doesn't happen.
If you just go and try to speak you will quickly get into a communication mode that works, but will be full of grammar mistakes and misused words. You can communicate, but it is painful for the person you are talking with. The other thing that happens is that you only go to language school and only speak English at school, but outside of the classroom you never spend time with anyone but Japanese speakers. You many say a few words of English to your homestay family in the morning or at night, a few words to shop clerks or bus drivers, but the rest is Japanese.
From listening to Yukari it is clear that she avoided those to problems and came back to Japan after a year in Canada a good English speaker.
No homework for next week.
Midori joined us again this week. I am not sure if she is planning to come to this class the rest of the semester or not. There was no homework last week so we spent a little more time talking about the news. Sayuri mentioned about the change in the shipment of VCRs and DVD players. The sales of DVD player/recorders have really taken off. She is afraid that she won't be able to rent videos in the future.
Last week Sayuri asked me if I knew of a place where she could find some photos of the northern lights, but the site I told her about no longer has them. This site has a huge selection.
At the end of class Sayuri asked me if there was a word for someone who has contradictions in themselves, but I can't think of the word right now. I will ask the other teachers and see what they think.
The homework for next week is to remember the first movie or TV show you saw about America and what impressions did you form of America. Write a short essay and we will take a look at them at the beginning of class next week.
Wow! People really got into to tonight's topic. It was one of the most active classes we have had in a long time. It is also the first time that we have had a large class back to back in a long time. I hope that we can keep this up the rest of the term.
A lot of good words came up in exercise #1 and I think most of them are very useful. As we talked about in class some of them can be negative or positive. You should check your dictionaries to make sure you understand the nuance of these words before you use them. The homework is to write sentences using the words that you didn't know.
If you look at the bottom of the column on the right you will find a link to the webquest that I will be teaching next semester. I think for some of you it would be a good class to take, but it will be difficult. It will also require work outside of the classroom.
Yukari has decided to join this class which is great because we always have a small number. We finished up the unit on saving face and I think everyone is glad. It was much more difficult than I thought it was going to be. I just assumed because this idea is something that is common in Japanese culture people would have an easy time talking about it. I was wrong or it is not as common in Japan as I thought. The homework for next week is to do #4 in part 9 on page 55.
Yumiko and Yumi today. The good news is that we may be having a new student joining us next week, so when Kiriko comes back we will be back to four.
We finished the unit on face and both of you had some good examples of losing face. Here is a good link about saving face.
I was surprised when I walked and Miyuki was here today. I didn't think she would brave the snowy roads to drive here from Taiki. She said it was even snowing harder in Taiki than in Obihiro. That was the same for me. It was snowing much harder in Kamiobihiro than it was here.
At the beginning of class Miyuki talked about a news article she had read in the Hokkaido Newspaper about the number of foggy days at Lake Mashu last year. They were much fewer than normal because of the weather patterns over the Pacific Ocean. Sayuri talked about a book of short stories that she had read, but I forgot to write down the author's name. I hope Sayuri will post a comment with the name of the book and author.
Midori from the Tuesday morning Step 3 class joined us for a make up class today. The opinion of the students in this class was the same as the others--Unit 25 is difficult. This class did come with many good answers for the questions in #6.
I mentioned at the end of class that in articles on Japan you will often see the terms lose face or save face. This is from an article about Japan's banking problems:
What is the one common cliche that is told about the Japanese? They hate to lose face. Avoiding embarrassment, or creating embarrassment for others, is part of the national character. Here the author is pointing out that it is a cliche, but in others it is part of the reporting.
This class found answering the four questions difficult, so I will see how the other three classes do. There is no homework for next week, but you should try to bring in some news to talk about at the beginning of the class.
Yukari, a former JOY student, observed the class tonight and will be joining the Tuesday 3C class tomorrow. We just don't seem to have much luck in finding new students for this class. I don't remember Kenshi saying anything about being absent tonight, but maybe something came up at work.
This class is a little behind the others so we just started Unit 25. The response to this unit by most of my Step 3 classes has been the same. They have never really thought about it before. Is that because it is so ingrained in the culture or it's not part of the culture? The homework for next week is to answer the four questions in #6. We will see what people come up with.
Yumi had company today because Sayuri came to do a make up class for the one she missed when she was in Hawaii. I forgot to ask her which campus she visited when she visited the University of Hawaii. Today she answered questions from Yumi about her trip. Yumi asked if she had seen any famous Japanese people there and she said she had. One was the group Tube. They were filming something in the restaurant of the hotel where she was staying. She also saw tv announcer and pro golfer.
We talked about face, which according the the dictionary entry has been in use since the 1800s. The home work for next week is to answer the four questions in number 6.
Well, Sayuri and Miyuki were back today. Last week Sayuri was in Hawaii and Miyuki said she had forgotten about class. Masako will be taking a break for awhile and will rejoin us in the spring.
Sayuri had a good time, but didn't speak very much English. She said it was cooler than she had expected and there weren't as many Japanese as she thought there would be. Her postcard just arrived a few minutes ago and it is a picture of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel where they stayed. She got back last night, but didn't seem to have much jet lag. She said one of her highlights was her visit to the campus of the University of Hawaii. She was impressed with how beautiful the place was and she would like to attend there if she could.
We started Unit 25 and talked about "losing face" and "saving face". The homework for next week is to answer the four questions in #6 on page 55.
Yoshie had mentioned before the break that she would be absent tonight, but I was hoping that we might get a couple of people doing a make up class. Any Step 3 people out there looking for a day to do make up classes Monday 3B is a good night. It is a very small class.
Kenshi and I talked about a variety of topics. He had a good time with his family over the break, but didn't have a chance to study much English. He did read one of the graded readers, but that was about all. He didn't play as much tennis as he had hoped because his wife had injured her knee.
It was good to see a few people made it back after the break. I think that Asuna has a tennis tournament this week and Mayumi maybe traveling.
We talked about everyone's break and most people had a quite one. Ichiko enjoyed time with her granddaughter and children. Yumiko bought a lucky bagat a bag shop, but didn't like what she got. She sent to her son and he didn't like it either. She said she usually buys a bag from a supermarket because you get practical things. A couple of other students in other classes who bought bags were disappointed with the contents.
We started Unit 25 and the idea of face. The topic was a little difficult, but by the end people had a better idea of the concept. The homework for next week is do #6 on page 55.
Yumi was a little late today because she had to do something with her husband before class. Yumiko was very glad to have the company. She wasn't looking forward to speaking English the whole class without any help.
We talked about people's most memorable New Years. There were some very nice memories. I think I mentioned to some the classes that I liked it better when most stores were closed on the 1st and 2nd and with only a few opening on the 3rd. I know most people nowadays would find that very inconvenient, but it really gives the people who work in shops and restaurants a chance to have a holiday. I don't think there is much of a chance of things going back to the way they used to be.
It looks like next week Yumi is going to be the only person, so if there are any other Step 3 students who want to do a make up class think about coming next Friday.
